After I'd read the Malazan Book of the Fallen two weeks ago, I started reading the first Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.
I've now finished it, so that's 2400 pages in two weeks. A very refreshing change of pace. Much easier reading, and it's the best page turner trilogy I've read except for the Kingkiller Chronicles. It's Brandon Sanderson's first trilogy and it isn't quite as mature as his later Stormlight Archives, and has got quite a few fantasy tropes and clichés, but apart from that it's a fantastic fantasy trilogy and had a surprisingly satisfying ending.
I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.
Now I'm gonna read Don Quixote

Okay, Don Quixote is fucking boring. I've now started reading Worm instead. The longest book I've yet to read. The official page count is 7000, though my epub reader says 5400. If you count The Malazan Book of the Fallen as a book and not a book series, that one was twice as long though.

how do you like it? Feel like it's something I ought to read, given my tastes and views. But worry it comes off as silly and self-indulgent (he's rejecting industrial civilization while privileged enough he'll always get benefits from it; his outdoor trips were just escapes) I'm just through the first 50 pages, so I can't say much. So far I quite like it as it endorses my thoughts and feelings, some statements can be seen as platitudes but probably weren't back then. You end up finishing it? What'd you think? dunno how interested (or how much you know of) American history but if you are, his eulogy of John Brown (tried to start a slave revolt in Virginia and was executed) is a good read. avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/thoreau_001.aspslightly ironic for someone for advocated non-violence but everyone has their limits. Good quote. The United States have a coffle of four millions of slaves. They are determined to keep them in this condition; and Massachusetts is one of the confederated overseers to prevent their escape. Such are not all the inhabitants of Massachusetts, but such are they who rule and are obeyed here. It was Massachusetts, as well as Virginia, that put down this insurrection at Harper's Ferry.

I can recommend to read it, very enriching and I like it how he can phrase things very nicely that were somehow in my mind too.
Yeah seems like Thoreau was big opponent to slavery, props for that!

I'm quite into the classic Utopias/Dystopias recently. I've finished Walden Two, now I'm reading Brave New World.

I just finished (re-)reading Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar by Sebag-Montefiore. I had read it before, years ago. What a terrible mass murderer, cruel, cynical, subdolous bastard that Stalin was! (And besides, his long-standing tyranny discredited the socialdemocratic/left ideas in the countries which were under his rule. And as a result, after the collapse of the Soviet regime, many of these countries opted for laissez faire capitalism (which, in my opinion, was a mistake).)

Laudato Si - Pope Francis Interesting take on Climate Change / Ecological Destruction from an unlikely source Interesting, I would have never expected him to have any meaningful opinion on anything scientific. But I shalt not read this drivel.
