After finishing The Meaning of Hitler I'm reading Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow. A must read for any snow lover imho with some really nice weather descriptions.
As a sideline I'm also re-reading LOTR, my all-time favourite.

For leisure reading I now read 'The Silk Roads' by Peter Frankopan. I previously read 'Fibula, Fabula, Fact - Finland During the Viking Age' and 'Finland - A Guest for the Third Reich'.

Dammit Godwin's law. La Bête Humaine (The Beast Within) by Emile Zola; been a while since I last opened it though.

"The Idiots Guide to Moderating City-Data Forums"—by J.R.R Voloschlong, illustrated by Cumbium McDunkinMyDickInCoffee. Quite an interesting read, I must say!

I'm reading LOTR too actually after having read The Hobbit. The Hobbit, I've read many times; LOTR I was read as a bedtime story and I don't remember any of it anymore.

I'm dipping in and out of "The Power Of Now" by Eckharte Tolle.
I have quite a few books I read on Google Books as well. A recent book I was reading is "Cloud Dynamics" by Robert A. Houze, Jnr. Quite technical.

Why is there no book thread? I finished reading the Name of the Wind books (Kingskiller Chronicles). Absolutely fantastic. Anyone who enjoys fantasy from time to time would love it I'm sure. It's got like 4.55/5 on the imdb of books (goodreads), comparable to for example the Godfather and Shawshank redemption movies.
And now I'm reading the Night Angel trilogy. Actually just finished the first book an hour ago and haven't started on the second yet. It's not as good as Kingskiller Chronicles. It's not as beautfully written, and the character is not as lifelike, but it's a page turner either way. It's not as good, but I don't expect to find a book as good as the Kingskiller Chronicles soon.

^ Fuck lol. I suck at searching for things. Seriously. Ask me to see if we have milk in the fridge and I'll search for 10 minutes not finding it, tell you, have you buy milk and then listen to you scold me for letting you buy a bunch of milk when we in fact had three jugs.

I tried reading LOTR but got bored because it was so slow. I did like the movies tho. Now I'm reading A Game of Thrones, which is pretty good.

Problem with the LOTR is the dated writing style, quite dense and not easy to dive into. The Hobbit is far more accessible for modern readers.

I read those books enforced by mum when I was around 9-10 and it was just too boring for me. Those books were so boring that I later ignored the movies and actually never saw them, so the insistance really backfired instead

Fuck off. What's with all these high fantasy trilogies having to follow multiple characters? In ASoIAF (GoT) it makes since because the main character is the world itself, and not a person.
But in general I feel a book should be able to tell the story through one person's eyes. Having to switch character all the time just feels like "cheating" in a way, with the negative consequence of completely messing up the tempo and flow of the books. There's nothing worse than reading an exciting chapter and storyline just to face another chapter following some completely uninteresting person, completely killing the excitement and flow.
The Kingskiller Chronicles follows just one person, and every chapter picks up where the last one left off, and there's constantly something going on, tugging forward like on rails in one coherent flow.
The last books I read were the Night Angel books, and they didn't do that, making them far less page turning exciting. Now I've started reading the Way of Kings, and here too they make you follow different characters. It makes me much less excited about reading the next chapter. Boke

Some of the finest pieces of literature every written follow multiple characters. I don't see the issue.
It only fails if the writer is shit.
