rozenn , that's a really cool place. Have you been there?
It definitely looks like a good place to build a house...
Nope, I wanted to check out the Vercors while in Nice, but moved back to Paris before I had the occasion. I could do it from Paris though! Looks beautiful.
@sari from your comparison with KC, it's not obvious that Maryville is a frost hollow. The differences are larger when it comes to the hgihs 2 times out of 3. Do you have the averages, so we can compare the diurnal ranges? The fact that it has larger diurnal ranges than Rock Port works in its favor, but it's not obvious from the small sample you've shown in comparison to KC.
shalop haha didn't expect anyone to remember about the Amburnex sinkhole. Must be frustrating for a cold lover to live only a few km away from a place that routinely dips into the -30s while stuck in an endless oceanic borefest.
Here are the past two months at the Amburnex-Combe (inside the sinkhole) and the Amburnex (outside) stations:

The "Beast from the East" didn't drop the temps into the -30s, while the thermometer had dipped below -30°C three times earlier in the month, including a low below -35°C.
Now here's the temperature difference between the two weather stations, regarding both highs and lows. A positive figure means that the bottom of the sinkhole was colder than the ambiant air, a negative one that it was warmer. Note that the highs are colder outside the sinkhole more often than not. Indeed, inversions don't last a whole day with the warmish February sun and there is more wind. Sorry for the crappy formatting, can't be arsed doing screenshots and all that shit.

So on March 2, at sunrise it was -26°C at the Amburnex-Combe station and -9°C at the Amburnex one, a stone's throw away. Quite an unusual temp pattern this morning, as it was significantly colder outside the sinkhole.
Crunch41 yeah I remember it from C-D, fascinating read. Here's the approximate location of point D, where the -71°C low was recorded:
goo.gl/maps/s5dfsf6o1wqAnd potentially the coldest spot along the road, just before it ascends the slopes of Steamboat mountain:
goo.gl/maps/YQQG6rVmZNz@b87 speaking of urban and suburban frost hollows, going by amateur readings the temperature dipped down to -24.9°C on February 8 in a peat bog in Montmorency forest, just after the epic snowfall (for Parisian standards). Sounds extreme, though the conditions were ideal there (fresh snow and no clouds). The local geography is conductive to cold nights as the relief is more pronounced than in the rest of the region, protecting it from the slight wind that blowed that night. Of course it was cloudy until late in the night at Orly airport. That night, the coldest Meteo France reading in the region was -13.7°C though, so I'd be cautious with it but frost hollows are always surprising and calm-ish, starry nights with fresh snow on the ground are as rare as hen's teeth in this part of the world, so we don't really know the potential of such locations. Last time the temp dipped below -20°C at an official weather station in Ile-de-France was in January 2010 (-21°C in Brétigny). Last time it approached -30°C was in January 1985 (-28°C in Saint Arnoult, which is one of the coldest towns in Paris region at night).
