We had a snowstorm lasting for a day and a half with brutal 10m/s windspeeds at -12'C and light to heavy snow. It was calmer in the forest though. Taiga: Bike shed got snowed in towards the end of it. Difficult to discern how deep the snow is because the snow blew into snow drifts everywhere. I think the average snow depth is about 40-50cm. Lots of snow on this garbage bin though. Disappointingly cloudy the last couple of weeks considering how cold it's been. Some sun can be found though. Still a lot of shadows from a low sun. We don't only have a lot of planted birches... Pathetic clean air sunrise Daylight and sun angle are increasing so quickly now. 21st January at 14.10 4th February at 14.10. More snow now too.

Civil twilight after 5 PM, -8°C. After three months of darkness, seeing that feels great.

bike ride to Northport (village on the harbor, Long Island). Gets a little hilly on the north shore. Fancy homes in the woods pier in ice firm enough for the swan to stand on checking out the rest of the harbor down the pier nice ice shapes felt much colder by the harbor and especially on the pier, was in the mid 50s a block away from the water but the harbor had chilly breeze gross air in NYC, I noticed smog to the north interesting ice patterns clearly a bit of an inversion to the north with the haze trapping pollution

Alright, time for some deep freeze pictures from the last couple days in Saskatoon! Some early morning pictures at -41C (with a -51C windchill) yesterday: A similar picture to the one above, taken this morning at a comparable -39C (with a -50C windchill): And some brave person biking around in aforementioned -39C weather and creating their very own windchill that was surely worse than the one the rest of us experienced: A nice sunset picture from last night, at -28C... that cloud you see is actually steam from the city's main power plant: Walking around at a frosty -30C this evening. Less cold than those morning pictures but a bit more wind (or at least the wind was coming from the right places so that I was less sheltered from it) so it felt just as nasty. Again, that low-lying cloud in the first two pictures is steam from the power plant: Some frosted trees:

Don’t think my hands would even be able to operate a camera in such cold. Great shots.

Neat cloud edge as the front came in; unfortunately no lightning Had neat clouds here too as the front arrived here early this afternoon. Hardly got any rain as the line of storms had weakened. Got up to 79F around noon right before the arrival. Kind of surprised it didn't reach 80F. In the upper 40's this evening and forecast to get down to 35F for the low.

Bike ride up the Hudson on the mild Tuesday we had; went up into the 60s. Cold now, nice to look back on. Going to put a ton of photos will use lots of spoilerStarted in Midtown Manhattan. Nice bike lane that was soon blocked by construction new glass tower rising above old brick ugly smog. Low-level temperature inversion; about 54°F at 925 mb, 54°F at the surface, trapping pollution less smoggy view crossed from Manhattan into New Jersey. In the Palisades ice floes in the middle of the hudson. looking at the northern tip of Manhattan George Washington Bridge more park roads in the Palisades highest point on the Palisades dirt park paths were a muddy mess from too much rain and then recently melted snow. Still bikeable. Bicycles dug into the road, cars would have dug too deep, leaving big puddles and making it easy to sink ice lingers pier in Piermont, NY late afternoon some more similar ones me biked through Nyack. then the west side of the Hudson was parkland again. About 5 pm, nice evening glow. Sunset is now at 5:20 pm, was really nice to have more time there was a thin blue glow along the horizon, didn't know the cause another view cool ice chunks inviting path beginning section wasn't too muddy but then the mud returned. more bicycle tracks now dusk. still a nice light some short steep hills. First one was really hard cause my bike refused to shift the small cog in the front. Would have been impossible if it were dirt and had to fight the soft surface could more post-sunset ones After the park, there's a ferry service to get to the east side and catch a train. Discovered the ferry was canceled due to ice. I was wondering how the ferry could deal with all the ice on the shore. "Must be a strong ferry, I thought". Instead there was a replacement bus service with a grumpy driver who grumbled but let me put a bike on the bus. Total ride distance was 40 miles or 64 km.

Have I ever told you I fucking hate snow? Extremely bright outside during the day now. Can barely see any definition on the ground from the glare. Currently 63cm of snow. That's more than we've had in Umeå since 2011.

Looking real nice over there. But how rhe fuck can the river not be frozen? Alberta is fucking frigid as fuck and has been for many months now The power plant at the south end of the city releases warm water back into the river as it flows north into the city, which prevents it from freezing over. Even in the coldest of winters the western half of the river is always open. If you go south of city limits the river is fully frozen all the way across by the end of the winter, deep enough that you can safely walk/skate/ski on it. I've even seen snowmobiles on it on some occasions.

beautiful winter wonderland photos Morningrise . hard to tell that it's extremely frigid rather than merely frigid (like -15°C) except for the mist and steam off the river. How do you manage to take photos in that cold? Saskatoon looks like a decent city for its size, feel like similar American ones of the same age and size wouldn't look as good.

Nothing excessive in amount. I enjoy watching a thin white blanket like this which is aesthetically pleasing yet does not affect much in traffic condition.

Today was a sunny day, and relatively mild with a -4'C high and nowadays the sun can actually be felt on your cheeks. I like snowclad spruces in sunlight. The sun is getting higher quickly. Snow level too. The bench is almost covered. This building is called "the butter dish". At the river looking away from the city. Snowier trees in the opposite direction. Lots of people out on this beautiful day with by far the best weather in a month... Which isn't saying much because it's still -4'C... Sun has started getting strong enough to melt snow even when it's below freezing like today. Melted off a lot of the snow on the branches and twigs, unfortunately The new library building fits quite well in the winter actually. Also, notice the snow depth. Snowy central park I'm not sure if the bicycle parking spot is snow free because the asphalt is so dark it gets heated by the sun, or if it's ground heated. Probably the latter. Looks funny with the snowy bike. Idk I thought this looked pretty, idk, might delete later Went along the lake at home as the sun was about to set. Dog More sunset pictures along the lake... A lot of mouse tracks. Don't mice and other gerbils hibernate? Cottage This bridge is named "the China bridge" lol

Damn some awesome pics on here lately! I especially enjoyed shalop's Chicago vid and pics. It's fascinating to see such a large metropolis operating in arctic conditions. And to think that it might record a low 50°C warmer than the high that day a few months from now! Fuck, Chi-town's climate is almost perfect, I'm jealous. And of course Saskatoon and Umea look like winter wonderlands. They both have been much colder than necessary lately, but it makes for beautiful pics. there was a thin blue glow along the horizon, didn't know the cause >> Methinks that the upper 2/3rds of the hill are still in the sun while the lower tier is in the shade. After the park, there's a ferry service to get to the east side and catch a train. >> Fuck grumpy bus drivers. I once had to walk 10 km with a bike with a flat tire in the hand because the bus driver wouldn't let me in, even if the bus was nigh empty. I was near Cherbourg in Normandy the other day. Sorry for the lack of snow. Surprisingly, that area gets huge snowfalls from time to time when the setting is right (there have been two 50 cm+ falls this decade). Of course, one has to be extremely lucky. Lonely bight: The waves wre pretty large. €11 billion dollar U/C nuclear reactor in the background (the white one): Atomic village Dunes vs meadows Dunes actually climb up the hills there: WW2 tank
