58.45°N, one week prior to the winter solstice and this is the winter wonderland Nyköping has to show for it. Taken just after "cloudset" yesterday so it's not exactly solar noon, but this is not what you want from winter: Sleep-inducing stuff, but quite a nice area that, anyway. That sucks. Early winter has been pretty great here, I thought you'd be similar. I'll post pics once it snows some more though.

Went out today. Some blue skies this time, although sunlight was very limited due to clouds near the horizon. The short time where it was actually sunny, it was very pretty at least. Some 2cm of snow fell last night. Pretty interesting patterns in the snow on the lake. Taken at 12.01 These are mostly just the same pictures as yesterday, but with a blue sky. I apologize. This is what I was talking about yesterday; only the west-facing side of trees is white. The other side is green. So weird, since (up until today) there hasn't been any snowfall in almost a week. Would you want to live in this cottage? Yes or no? Trail Some fog on the ice. About -5'C. This is 12.16. Peak sun angle is now only 3.1°

Here there are some picture from this week. The weather changed quite a lot, we passed from stable 15°C because of a long-lasting foehn wind episode in the last weekend to quite cold days with also some snow on the ground. Let's start with a couple of pictures I took on Monday evening while leaving the university, at about 5 pm (sunset time). ^ the sky over Turin was extremely clear, I rarely see such a clear air over the city in general. Everyone was complaining because of the wind, but the usual polluted fog of December in Turin is much worse in my opinion. Also notice the clouds in the horizon: those are the clouds blocked by the Alps, so it is basically the line were the foehn wind effect starts. My village is actually very close to the clouds visible in this picture. ^ probably I could have found a better focus, but I didn't have enough time to stop for a longer time. This is my village today instead. Today we woke up with a couple of cm of wet snow and low-lying clouds. The abusive palm tree in our garden doesn't look too upset by this weather: Some funny pictures: in these days, the village is full of puppets representing old people who lived in here, they are meant to attract tourists ( ) Some of them were quite entertaining, at least: ^ Ida and Maria Elisa Vayr, the "Grëgl sisters": Ida and Maria Elisa (called "Marietta") were born in the 1800s and lived in this village. They are remembered because during their daily activities and walks they always used to be followed by their beloved little white goat. ^Clemente Felicità (Flicina) 1912-1999 She used to sell vegetable seeds. On the table behind the puppet, there are a lot of vegetables names in our weird Franco Provençal dialect. ^ Silvestro Zefferina (1897-1987) She used to live in the woods of the frazione Biolòej. Eating only what the woods could provide her (mushrooms, berries...) she lived her whole life. She used to keep her few money in her socks, until a man stole them. Since then she started to cover her face with ash in order to keep the people away. She also used to tie some cans to her belt for keeping vipers away. Even the contemporary villagers are quite weird people sometimes, someone decided to make a nativity scene full of penguins inside a little chapel ^ some characteristic hold houses. Only the one on the left is still inhabited.

BabuI wouldn't mind staying in that cottage but not as my primary residence. Nice photos though.

Some winter photos from today in Trondheim. The first are from the SE Hills, about 300 m ASL. The last few from a part of the city ca 120 m ASL.
It was another clear day, temp ca 1-2C in the city and just barely below freezing in the hills, and it was just after noon.
It was a winter day as nice as they get on Dec 16th, only 5 days from winter solstice.

Ahhhhhhhhhh. It’s good to be home! Why do you screenshot your own snap instead of pressing the save button, thus removing the HUD?

Babu Mainly because it’s annoying to have a ton of saved snaps but I should probably do that anyway from now on.

Fifty shades of fog today ^ 8 am from the train, visibility just above 50 m I would say. There was also a quite thick frost on the ground in that moment. ^ noon, the visibility shortly rose above 100 m. Actually, I'm quite sure that in the city center there were a couple of sunny hours. ^ 4 pm, visibility below 50 m (it is extremely unusual to be barely able to see the building on the other side of the road...) ^ bonus picture: pigeons in the train station seem to start to suffer the cold as well (outdoor the temperature was of about 0°C in that moment, so probably inside the train station atrium it was a couple of degrees warmer)

It's been hovering at or slightly above 0'C for the last day or so, with almost 10cm of new snow. Especially towards the end it's been sticky. Unfortunately only night time pictures until next weekend. Oh my fucking god. Do you see that snowball? Wrong. It's not a snowball. It's just a ball of snow that's build up on Noah's leg fur from running around in snow up the same depth as his legs! This is ridiculous.

I could potentially flood you with snow pictures already, but I'd prefer to wait a few days to assess which ones were the best and take some more, since knowing Nyköping's luck, it'll surely be gone soon. Either way, here are three from the first proper snowfall of the year, on Sunday: There's a lot more now. I can throw this one from yesterday in for good measure:

In cold periods, it is pretty common with snow on the ground even down to sea level. Even if our avg high (1.3C/34F in Jan using 81-2010) is above freezing all year, our weather is characterized by weather patterns that often last some time. So for 10 days straight in winter the avg high might be -2C to -6C, and the next 10 days might have avg high 4C to 8C.
Right now it's mostly no snow near sea level, but at this built up area in the photos at 120 m asl and a little from the fjord there are ca 5-8 cm snow cover.
Warm periods in winter will be warmer at sea level, cold periods colder further from the sea level. It also falls down more precipitation in the hills, especially west of the city (Bymarka/City hills).
So the snow cover period at the highest built-up areas on the western part (ca 200 m ASL) will be much longer than down at sea level. There can be green lawns in Apr near sea level and 20 cm snow cover at the highest built up areas.
At our airport, near sea level but not in the city, a little older data gave 14 days/winter with at least 25 cm snow cover. Using the 71-2000 base period, much of the city will have 25-50 days with at least 5 cm snow cover, and 50-100 days at the highest built-up areas. Less now than in those years.

A brand new halo component was discovered in Borlänge in Sweden on the 14th. It will probably be named after the guy who took the picture: Edbäck's parhelia. This is the new parhelia And on the opposite northern side it looked like this:
