Some pictures from last weekend. Temperature was around freezing with a light wind. Started out on the main path that is a mix of dirt, gravel, and sometimes pavement.
This path has been flooded since late summer and isn't draining anytime soon. I wasn't sure if the ice would hold my weight after the warm weather. It cracked a bit but held.
After that, there was a stream in the way. There was a culvert under the path but it was blocked or frozen. Someone put down branches to make a bridge.
I went up a hill to get a view. I've probably posted pictures from here before. The sun was too much for my phone camera this time.
Beaver made a dam on this pond.

Edit: these are not my photos!
No beavers in NZ? I guess they are mostly in North America and Europe. Wiki page for beaver. A beaver is a large rodent that spends most of its time in the water. It can chew through trees easily, that's what the bottom picture was. A beaver cut it down with its teeth. It uses branches to make homes in the lake that look like this.
The entrance is underwater but the main part of the home is above water. They make dams to change the flow of water. They need slow-moving or still water to make their home and deep enough water so it doesn't freeze solid. In my picture they made the dam to keep the water level higher in the pond, it's not very deep otherwise. This dam is much bigger.

A few pictures from a walk around the nearby hill yesterday. Temp was 9C/48F. Gorse. There were a few bees and some smaller insects flying past occasionally. Too much haze on the horizon to see the London skyline, but Heathrow Airport was just about visible just right of the centre. A water tower

Beautiful pics AW!
I love those kind of landscapes with open prairies and mountains in the distance.
