Blue skies today, but alas no sun hours. Beech tree. I like this style of houses a lot. It's got a nice variety between suburbia, and different kinds of apartment looks. Look at how colorful these apartments are Quite the contrast from where my parents live where it's basically brick apartments shaped like bricks. I like how the wind yesterday blew all leaves into neat piles in these small nooks crannies, whatever they are.

Polar front approaching from the SW, near Thredbo River; nasty, black, and wintry: Crackenback, NSW; 1,260-1,440 m AMSL; 36° S; polar front arrives from the SW: On the way back to Eucumbene; temperature plummeted from 31.5° C to 14.0° C within an hour: Middlingbank, NSW; 1,280-1,365 m AMSL; 9.0° C with squally showers, wind chiefly SW/SSW: Temperature near Jindabyne was 31.5° C at high noon; plummeted to 14.0° C in another hour (as the polar front arrived), then finally by the afternoon, 9.0° C at Middlingbank with a classical, wintry South-Westerly gale. Aussie Tablelands Summer...strewth!

This week I was stuck in a scientific conference organised by our university just few km from my place, in Bardonecchia. The intention was to choose a tourist-ish place in order to attract more participants I think. We didn't have much time for visiting the place anyway, so I only have two pictures: Very little snow for January standards, btw.

^Last month I was stuck at a scientific conference in Palo Alto. It was warm so it sucked ass. Got some pics of palm trees and rolling hills. However, such things do not belong in a winter thread, so instead I will post pics of my Yellowknife trip so far.
Great Slave Lake surrounded by the taiga:
Fat biking on the ice at -31c:
Find the bird:
Easier:
The US NWS defines "extreme cold" as -35F or lower. I would roughly agree, as this felt perfectly managable with an ordinary parka and good layering.

^ That's awesome! How long are you there for? Looking at the forecast, you picked a pretty sweet time to go. There's a slight chance of -40 C for Wednesday and Thursday night (-38 C forecast) and a lot of highs under -30 C.

^Yeah man, I got lucky. I got here last Thursday the 10th, and I go back home on Friday 18th. I sort of just picked the week of the year with the coldest averages and crossed my fingers. Even more luckily, NYC's forecast seems to be improving drastically after I get back.

^Yeah, there are some faint aurora tonight. But if I try to take a picture of them, it just comes out all black.

Couple pics from the Alps last week. Cold morning, around -13°C. The high was a chilly -8°C. The snowcover was quite poor for the season. Mont Blanc in the distance (around 50 km away). Snowy the day after

Few more Yellowknife photos. It's been cold, but nothing truly incredible like -50c. Been able to spend 4-6 hours outside each day even with my cheap gear. Yellowknife ice caves: Coldest temp I recorded on this trip: When it gets close to -40 like that, you get a really "cool" phenomenon called ice fog over the Great Slave Lake: Rime ice on the trees downtown: Hiking:
I have some more pics & vids (about 500), so I'll upload a dozen more or so later.

Great changes in visibility this week. At the beginning of the week, with the foehn wind effect which lowered the humidity levels all over the region, the view over the mountains around Turin was fantastic. Here the Monviso in the middle of apartment blocks (that mountain is in here, so quite far from the city). Yesterday was another boring and foggy day instead, the entrance of my lab was quite spectral...
