What does #theben think of my new interactive maps behind the spoilers? boombo Is this a Geography test where we have to mark on where the hell places like Kuujjuaq and Matagami are? Why exactly is Fort McMurray the only town on there that's actually named? #theben thinks #thelom has too much time on his hands lol

Of course you should know where Kuujjuaq (58°N North Québec) and Matagami (49°N Central Québec) are though, that's just compulsory knowledge

#swedishautism ftw Matagami is along with Baie-Comeau the southernmost non-elevated actually populated subarctic climates with winters beneath -10°C rather than Tromsø light in North America so why are you laughing, #theben? That's critical information for any weather enthusiast. Matagami's -13/-27 January means are of great interest to me.

Baker Lake looking quite cold to start off April, with highs about 7-10 C below average....before reverting back to "average" conditions". Normal conditions in Baker Lake at this time of year are still bitterly cold.

And of course, the obligatory Vostok Station forecast.....look how brutal with those -63 C - -65 C highs that's mid-winter levels. Also, losing about two hours of daylight per week....they're at 24-hour darkness by late April.

Siberia and related; 4/4-10/4:
Astana: 4/-3 Chita: 4/-8 Irkutsk: 4/-6 Harbin: 7/-4
Khabarovsk: 5/-5 Komsomolsk: 4/-7 Krasnoyarsk: 3/-6 Kyzyl: 8/-4
Magadan: -0/-5 Nakhodka: 7/0 Norilsk: -15/-25 Novosibirsk: 4/-7
Omsk: 2/-5 Oymyakon: -1/-18 Petropavlovsk: 1/-3 Spassk-Dalny: 4/-4
Ulaanbaatar: 3/-6 Verkhoyansk: -1/-19 Vladivostok: 5/-1
Yakutsk: -1/-10 Yuzhno-Kurilsk: 3/-1 Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk: 4/-6
Pretty serious warmup in the eastern part; culminating in 8°C being forecast later this week for Oymyakon, which would be a sensational temp this early in the season. Of course it would be dependent on strong southerlies to be the case and might change later, but it's impressive that place is even in the ballpark for that temp the first week of April considering the sheer amount of background cold there still is, as seen by the diurnals.
Norilsk however, remains Norilsk. Closer to the Ural Mountains the unseasonal cold is still quite strong, as being proven by Omsk being only 2°C in terms of average highs the coming seven days or meteorological week.

Europe above 61°N (4 Apr-10 Apr):
Arkhangelsk: 4/-1 Bodø: 3/-1 Faroe Islands: 6/2 Jyväskylä: 5/-3
Kautokeino: -1/-10 Kiruna: -1/-8 Kuusamo: 2/-4 Lillehammer: 6/-2
Luleå: 2/-4 Murmansk: 2/-3 Oulu: 2/-3 Petrozavodsk: 4/-0
Reykjavík: 4/-1 Rovaniemi: 3/-4 Røst: 3/-0 Skellefteå: 4/-4
Sundsvall: 5/-3 Tampere: 5/-2 Tromsø: 2/-4 Trondheim: 5/-1
Umeå: 4/-4 Vorkuta: -4/-12 Ålesund: 6/1 Östersund: 4/-3
So, the great thaw is about to begin or has already begun in places that had severe cold only recently. Now let's see if the melt of the insane snow amounts in these areas will proceed smoothly or whether severe flooding will occur.

Record heat in Oymyakon! 4.1C on the 5th, 5.5C on the 6th and 3.4C on the 7th all put a good few degrees on their date records. www.pogodaiklimat.ru/monitor.php?id=24688The -0.2C on the 4th was only 0.3C off the date record as well and the month as a whole is running 9C above average so far. Average or slightly below forecast for the next week though, but look at how sunny it is!

Siberia and related: 11/4-17/4:
Astana: 12/3 Chita: 12/-3 Irkutsk: 12/0 Harbin: 14/3
Khabarovsk: 11/1 Komsomolsk: 9/-2 Krasnoyarsk: 6/-0 Kyzyl: 18/3
Magadan: -1/-7 Nakhodka: 10/3 Norilsk: -5/-13 Novosibirsk: 6/-1
Omsk: 5/-3 Oymyakon: -4/-25 Petropavlovsk: 2/-3 Spassk-Dalny: 10/2
Ulaanbaatar: 12/-0 Verkhoyansk: 0/-20 Vladivostok: 9/2
Yakutsk: 0/-12 Yuzhno-Kurilsk: 5/0 Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk: 6/-2
So, a strong warmup in many areas as spring really kicks into gear over Siberia, with the exception of Yakutsk and Oymyakon where a cold ridge will take hold. Verkhoyansk and Norilsk see significant warmup though and Kyzyl's predicted warmth is remarkable, in particular considering how the areas nearer the Ural Mountains are still sort of chilly.

Trondheim is as Nidaros has pointed out in the general forecast thread also set to be extremely warm for the season. Also, the snow cover will surely get vaporized during the days now, Babu ? Re-freezing during the nights will definitely be an issue.

Lommaren: Snow melting has a lot more to do with means than highs, and the sun doesn't really melt snow that quickly apart from near non-snowy surfaces. Four days ago we had 112cm snow in Tavelsjö, and there's still like 100cm even though we've had highs above 5'C and sun ever since then.

North American continental places; on the high-latitude or cold side (11 Apr-17 Apr): Anchorage: 9/1 Calgary: 9/-1 Churchill: -9/-18 Edmonton: 7/-3 Fairbanks: 7/-7 Fort McMurray: 7/-5 Fort Simpson: 3/-9 Fort Yukon: 1/-13 Kuujjuaq: -6/-19 Inukjuak: -13/-22 Iqaluit: -12/-20 Matagami: -1/-10 Moosonee: -3/-12 Nain: -4/-12 Nome: -3/-13 Regina: 2/-6 Saskatoon: 4/-5 Thompson: 1/-17 Winnipeg: 4/-7 Yellowknife: -0/-11 Warming up in certain areas, but Inukjuak Wow... The Hudson Bay's thawing will be mighty late this season, and I foresee a significant lake of the lake around Yellowknife and other lakes in Northwest Territories to thaw. If the entirety of Hudson Bay remains solidly frozen in late May with ice depths worthy of March, then that could have serious adverse effects on Eastern United States obviously.

The Hudson Bay is usually largely frozen until Mid June...

The Hudson Bay is usually largely frozen until Mid June... Sure, but I mean the deep southern part towards 50°N that melts first. I've no idea when that usually thaws but northern Hudson obviously freezes for longer. That being said, any delay could wreak havoc with cold fronts hitting New York, New England and Southern Ontario all the way to the summer solstice.

Late May usually. Nothing out of the ordinary this. Well, an Alaskan warmup could take it back to a normal sequence, as it is; even now through mid-April, Inukjuak will be 5-6°C colder than a normal April mean, and that's through the middle of the month as well. Not out of the question that Inukjuak may well have a -20°C April mean considering the start to the month and that'll obviously delay the thawing even more than already has been taking place, we'll see

Re-freezing during the nights will definitely be an issue. Well, actually I pointed out the extremely sunny weather and sunhours the coming 8 days. Temperature of 12c/2c in mid-April is not extreme at all. Using the Swedish normal 2002-2016, avg for Apr here (Trondheim Airport) is 9.4c/1.8c. So highs are 2.6c above avg while lows are near normal. Using 1981-2010, avg is 8.9/1.3. In comparison, the whole month of March was nearly 4C below the 1981-2010 avg! So about time we have temps a little above avg here. Our sea water in the fjords are usually a lot warmer than the sea or even ice in the Gulf of Bothnia at the same latitude at this time of year.

During the 11-17 April week Tampere's average high is 8.2C. I know Lommaren wasn't referring to it, just mentioning for common comparison. For the 18-24 April period the high rises to 11C, so I would say it's quite seasonable.
