Inspired by omegaraptor saying that he doesnโt need thunder for a storm to be epic. For me the thunder is by far the best part. I love the sound of it and for me, any storm without thunder is a lame one. Lightning is the second best part. Not as special as the thunder but still very cool. High winds are cool and nice if a storm has them but not necessary. Heavy rain can be interesting but this is unimportant. IMO, a dry thunderstorm is just as good as a normal thunderstorm. Iโm not doing anything during a tstorm anyway and I donโt want to have a desert landscape so I figure there might as well be rain with a thunderstorm but I donโt enjoy dry thunderstorms any less.

In order starting with my favorite:
Lightning: I always want to see the thunderstorm whenever I hear something that sounds like thunder. I guess sight is the most useful sense for most humans. Thunder: An integral part of a thunderstorm just like lightning. Love the sound as well. Heavy downpours: I like the sound almost as much as thunder and I'd rather have no thunderstorm than a dry thunderstorm because dry thunder causes wildfires. High winds: Nice but not necessary.

Lightning > Thunder > High Winds > everything else

Thunder is the most enchanting part of thunderstroms. A low, rumbling thunder in the distance coming closer and closer and eventually startle you up as a loud cracking is truly amazing. That being said, I don't want to miss lightnings, heavy rain and strong winds, they are all essential parts of a great thunderstorm.

It's hard for me to decide what's the best part of a thunderstorm for me, I love each part and think it's essential. The best thunderstorms have all four (lightning, thunder, high winds, heavy rain) in abundance.

I'd say thunder from those options but I just love the dark skies (clouds) during such storms. Denver has awesome skies. If you're lucky enough to be in some kind of mountainous valley, the thunder reverberates off the topography making for a truly loud thunder. I experienced this in Squamish once and also in Montana.

Very close between lightning and thunder. I think cloud-to-ground bolts are the most exciting aspect, partly because they only sometimes happen.

When it's over. I nearly was struck by lightning when I was a child and semi fear thunderstorms. Definitely give me some anxiety.
I do like the wind gusts and heavy rain but not worth it for the lightning

I love watching the dark rumbling clouds slowly approach in the distance, feels apocalyptic. The most exciting part is probably the violent downpour.

Heavy downpours of course. The other stuff is outright scary. Especially when it struck basically in my house in August and sounded like a grenade going off. Having said that, looking out of a window at monsoonal rain is quite fun, if it doesn't last too long. Luckily this is in a subarctic latitude position similar to a rain shadow so it doesn't.

Distant lightning is cooler than distant thunder, but when lightning strikes close, the massive thunderclap is the coolest part (unless if you actually see where the lightning strikes the ground; that's the coolest)

Yeah, I was gonna say one of the best parts is the anticipation. Although of course it's nothing compared to it storming on top of you, which leads me to the worst part. When you see epic clouds heading your direction and the storm ends up missing you

The best for me is the lighting profile flashing in the night! Thunders instead are definitively better during the day, when they don't risk to wake you up at 4 am or something like that (as happens regularly at least 2-3 times every summer -.- ) I'm not a fan of heavy wind or heavy rain instead, even worse heavy hail, but this is probably because I immediately think about how they are going to destroy the garden and the fruit trees. An heavy rain, hail and wind storm would surely be dramatically epic view, though. Anyway, did someone ever saw/heard a lighting/thunder in the middle of a snow storm? That sounds quite epic, too.

When I lived in Denver I lived at the top of a hill. I had a perfect view of the Front Range mountains. It was so awesome watching the storms and lightning continuously hitting along those peaks in late afternoon. Also, there was once an all night thunderstorm right over me. Lightning struck a nearby lightpost, which immediately went dark of course. If you like thunderstorms, snow, and tropical highland levels of hail (Colombia/Ecuador), go to Denver in the spring in an El Niรฑo year.

Thunder > Heavy downpours > Lightning > High winds
Before clicking I thought the poll was about the chronology of a tstorm; was gonna answer the anticipation. I still remember the sight of a storm line slowly approaching from the south, taking over the horizon with near constant lightning back in June 2010 (!)

Lightning for sure. Thunderstorms are far preferable at night for this reason. The rest of it is fun aswell, but lightning first and foremost for me. I enjoy the anticipation, the excitement, the consumption of beer knowing I'm about to get a show, until it all evaporates into a pile of degenerate fluff just as it gets close enough to see bolts

If anyone wants a cool lightning wallpaper, this is a nice one. Taken in the Grand Canyon.

1) lightning 2) heavy rain 3) thunder 4) heavy winds
I enjoy all of these but lightning and heavy rain are the most important ones personally.

1. Thunder 2. Lightning 3. Heavy rain/downpours 4. High winds
I enjoy all of these conditions mentioned, however thunder/lightning are the most important ones; thunderstorms, both convective and frontal ones, should be the dominant type of precipitation.

I like seeing the anvil approaching, and the smell after it rains.
