May 2019 SummaryCold and exceptionally snowy May here; 14 precipitation days, half of which fell as snow (7 days). Well below average in maxima, and well above average in ice-days—I usually don't receive any subfreezing maxima until June-August, yet I've managed two of them this May. Heaviest May snowfall in two decades, as declared by the BOM itself and the ski resorts. Starting to look rather "continental" on the climate box, I might add; almost a 20° C maximal disparity between the tremendously hot January, and the current snowy May (much akin to 1939). Notable cold records broken this month were Young, NSW back to 1977; Cowra, NSW back to 1960; and finally, the most astonishing of all: Dalby, QLD back to 1911.

Melbourne Airport May 2019 Summary:
Average maximum: 17.5°C (+0.5°C) Average mean: 13.2°C (+0.6°C) Average minimum: 8.9°C (+0.6°C) Highest maximum: 22.0°C (1st, 18th) Highest minimum: 15.6°C (2nd) Lowest maximum: 10.1°C (29th) Lowest minimum: 4.6°C (30th) Precipitation: 59.4mm (178.5% of avg May rainfall) Precipitation days: 14 Precipitation days >1mm: 8 Sun hours: 160.7hrs (112.0% of avg. May sun hours) Highest wind gust: 80km/h from the N (20th) May started off as what I thought would be another warm, dry month, but then a significant rainfall event finally occurred on the 10th, followed by an unseasonable stretch of high teens/low 20s well into the end of May before a big cold snap on the 25th brought rain and cold temperatures on every day until the end. Quite a nice, variable May which is rare. Also, the combination of both above average sunshine and rainfall was achieved. Daily summaries:PWS for 2019:

12.5/2.5 (91-17 average 13.0/2.2) so below average highs, with slightly above average lows. Reasonably normal temps, less so if compared to later years.
Precipitation: about 75mm (normal 45mm) so 167% normal.
Sunshine: 245h (normal 271h) so 90% of normal.
Very wet, kinda cloudy, and cool month, especially comparing highs to the 2002-2018 period with a -1.1 deviation.

Preliminary readings something like 16/6, but will wait a few days for the official monthly report including sunshine to update the weatherbox, since I don't like calculating sunshine hours manually through "seconds per hour".

Cold fucken desert indeed! May 2019 was severely dry, just like March and April, with only 4.8mm of precipitation, compared to an average of 43mm. It also started off quite cool and didn't properly warm up until about 3 weeks into the month, especially the nights - May 1st recorded a colder low than any low in April! On the plus side we did get some well above average temperatures in the later part of the month, which helped push our monthly high into average territory. I'll have to wait until next week for the sunshine stats, but I'm pretty sure the sun hours will be above average. Average high: 18.2C (normal: 18.2C) Average low: 1.2C (normal: 4.1C) Mean temperature: 9.7C (normal: 11.2C) Highest high: 32.5C (May 30th) Highest low: 11.3C (May 30th) Lowest high: 5.9C (May 5th) Lowest low: -10.8C (May 1st) Precipitation: 4.8mm (normal: 43.0mm) Precipitation days: 5 (normal: 9.5)

Avg High: 69.3 Avg Low: 54.7 6.37 inches of precipitation, and you could feel every bit of it odd. western Massachusetts got less that half that amount of precipitation. Didn't help things much, just got long stretches of thick clouds with drizzle while you got rain. Average low of 54°F in May?! I forget how mild NYC lows are. Average here (using Amherst CO-OP): 66.4/46.0°F 3.10 inches of precipitation coldest temperature of the month 35°F on the 1st; warmest 85°F on the 27th (last Sunday, CO-OP stations end the day 7 am the next day) Average daily max was 3°F below average, low 2°F warmer. Must be one of the cloudiest Mays on record.

Takes 30 seconds you numbnut. Open the excel file, mark all the hours of the month, copy the sum into a calculator and divide by 3600. It was 235h.

1.6F warmer than normal and 4.04" more rainfall than normal. The first 3 weeks had an active weather pattern with t-storms and heavy rain, and some cooler than normal days. High pressure then took control bringing hotter temps and suppressing rainfall. Hit 90F or above all days but one between May 22 & 31. Prior to that we hadn't reached 90F. Lowest max: 74F Highest min: 75F Highest dewpoint: 74F Average dewpoint: 67F Lowest dewpoint: 49F Days with thunder: 8

Pörtlånd Airport May 2019 Weather SummaryPortland experienced a much warmer than normal May in 2019, putting it in the top five warmest on record with an average temperature of 62.1ºF. Warmest day of the month was 89/52, and the coolest was 57/50. Several convective downpours occurred, including an event where about 0.6" of rain fell in one night (separated by the midnight reset). Overall a decent May that had both sun and decent rain activity, even if the rainfall was lower than normal.

It was a bit of a disappointment, but I guess the last decade or two has made me a bit spoiled with regards to my perception of what May ought to be. Either way, the average was not quite 11°C, but at least it wasn't a subarctic month, there will be a "b" at the end of the year no matter what would happen in September, unlike in 1996, when September bailed the year out from the subarctic classification.
