Spring flowers in southwest Finland archipelago
Itβs still only January, but spring is already making its presence felt in parts of the archipelago in southwest Finland.
Brightly-hued yellow coltsfoot flowers (leskenlehti in Finnish) have been seen pushing their way through the soil in UtΓΆ, a small island in the southernmost part of the archipelago.
According to Simo Laine, head horticulturalist at botanical garden in Turku, southwest Finland, it could well be the first time that the blooms have made an appearance in the country as early as January.
Winter aconite:
Coltsfoot:
Writer Markku Karpio has lived on UtΓΆ for some time and is wrapping up his 16th winter there. He said that in January the island is usually covered in ice and there is no sign of spring. However he told Yle that he had also noticed the spring flowers a few days earlier.
"At first I thought it was trash" he laughed.
Another island-dweller, Brita WillstrΓΆm, also said that she did not remember having seen coltsfoot flowering on the island so early in the year.
Sorry for the off-topic, but we don't have a spring thread yet.

Dulles averaged cooler than Boston Logan this month alex992/photo/1 NYC LGA tied Boston. Interesting; maps of January don't show Boston as warm as NoVa, maybe a station quirk of Boston Logan for being both UHI and coastal so map interpolation mostly ignored it zooming into just MA via hprcc.unl.eduBoston Logan is a weird station, at least LGA is representative of the area, dunno if Boston Logan is.

Sun out for the first time in a while today. Warmed up to 61F. Before today had 6 days straight of overcast conditions with highs mostly in the low 50s.
Low 70's forecast tomorrow thru Tuesday. Possibility of severe storms Tuesday/Wednesday before temps cool down again.
