Happy Independence restoration day to us! Is Riga really that green right now?

Is Riga really that green right now? Any doubts? Scandinavian winds have stopped, subarctic conditions are over. The picture is from the city center of Riga near the Latvian University. Because of the urban heat island the city center is probably the greenest place in Latvia at the moment, it is definitely less green in the countryside.

And you're sure that's an image taken this year? Those look like the type of trees that normally are among the latest to get their leaves, yet only half of them even have a vernal green color with the others looking a deeper summer green. Comparing Riga's weather this year to for example Norrköping across the pond, there's nothing that stands out. Riga: Norrköping: Yet this is an image taken yesterday somewhere in Norrköping: And looking at Gothenburg, they've clearly had both warmer lows and highs in every month this year: But browsing instagram photos taken in Gothenburg, I can't find a single image showing as much spring progression as the one you posted. And looking at instagram pictures in Riga, it's not looking any better. It's of course difficult to know when the pictures uploaded on instagram are taken, but this one was stated to be from today: And this lady is wearing some sort of traditional clothing, so I can only assume it was taken today on your independence day. Of course some isolated forests and parks can have more or less leaves than others, but none of these pictures look like they could've been taken the same day in the same city as the on you posted.

I guess you mean winds from the northern part of Scandinavia, which often comes from farther north. The warmer cities of Scandinavia however seem warmer than Riga. Is the 1981-2010 mean annual for Riga 7C, or what is correct? Copenhagen is approx 9C, Bergen approx. 8.2C.

Long story short: I have copied the picture from the today's Twitter post of Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre. I don't know when it has been taken. Looking closer at it, it looks like summer, I agree. Norrköping is more northern than Riga, but yes temperatures are similar. Considering that Riga is more continental, I hope we will have better temperatures than Sweden in summer. Bravo for the research!

I mean air coming from northern Scandinavia of course. Otherwise, yes, Scandinavian cities can have higher means, but only exclusively because of warmer winters, since Riga is more continental. In summer, Riga should be warmer than Copenhagen and Bergen.

Doña Jimena, you're new and everything, but we have a tradition that the general photo threads are for pictures we take ourselves, and which are seasonal. Your picture is apparently from summer and from a previous year, and thus it would be more suitable in the General Chat Thread. We don't really have set rules on this forum, merely traditions, so they might be a bit confusing. Go out tomorrow and take some pictures of a local park or something, and then post them here. I think many people would be interested in what it looks like in Riga.

I was going to caption the hills outside my house's picture as "progress" but now once again I'm disappointed at our progress. Steelernation and nei are you past this or about the same (or worse )? This weekend made a huge difference. Here's a picture from friday

In summer, Riga should be warmer than Copenhagen and Bergen. Yes, Geba, that's right. I have noticed that in general, oceanic climates tend to show average temperatures as quite high because there are smaller temperature fluctuations in these climates than in more continental climates. Thus, oceanic climates tend to look, on average, a bit warmer than they actually are. And the opposite- take a look at the climate boxes of Siberian cities, for example, and you won't find anything special there. And of course you shouldn't forget the UHI, even Tartu has it although it is ca 7x smaller than Riga eg. I had to be in Tartu today and took a picture. In rural areas, trees are less green. However, it is not that much recommended to look at the averages of Tartu weather station at infoclimat, because the weather station called "Tartu" is located 20 km outside the city in the countryside,it has nothing to do with the city and so it is definitely cooler than the city actually. Steelernation and nei are you past this or about the same (or worse )? I think we’re a bit worse. More bare trees than that. Flowering trees are progressing nicely though.

And it's easy to assume images in news and twitter posts are concurrent. Doña Jimena Wasn't wrong to post it here, although we do tend to state where the pictures are from when they are aren't taken by ourselves.

Not a single photo in this thread have been taken by anyone but the poster himself. You must be confusing this thread with the "non-weather photos" thread.
And yes, it was wrong for her to post someone else's photo in this thread. Not a big deal, but don't you change the goalposts either.

By "this thread" I meant the seasonal photo threads in general. But I've myself uploaded a few pictures that weren't mine. Like this post. cdweather.boards.net/post/119441And I'm pretty sure I've done it multiple times in this spring thread alone. A bunch of people have uploaded photos in the seasonal photo threads that weren't taken by themselves. As long as you're transparent about where the picture is coming from, and it's relevant to the thread, i.e. either being a picture of a recent weather phenomenon, or showing the current progression of the season, it's completely fine.

You've done it maybe, but the rest of us haven't.
Pointlesss to argue though. Doesn't matter really.

I don't think it's pointless to defend someone new to this forum when a veteran unfairly accuses her of doing wrong or not fitting in. And I'm pretty damn sure you've posted pictures not taken by yourself in the seasonal photo threads, and many more people than just you and I have done so as well. IIRC Hiromant has gotten large numbers of likes on posts about the seasonal spring flooding of the Estonian wetlands for example.
