Massive rainfall and flooding in parts of this region yesterday.

Some observations from the harder hit counties... my immediate area was spared. But 7 inches (18cm) of rain in parts of NJ and over 10 (25cm) in parts of PA.

High was 89 (32 c) today before storms rolled in. The first round missed me, but the 2nd one brought a bit of thunder and lightning although not too much.

In total 0.20” (5 mm) fell at the airport, the 12th rainy day this month.

Humid day too with dews reaching 73 (23 c) and hovering in the low 70s all afternoon.

Assuming no more rain falls today, this is the most precipitation days ever for July 1-13th. The last 148 years, there had never been more than 9/13 rainy days to start July. This year blew that out of the water with 12. Also 4th most rain for the 1-13th.

More storms here today. Got up to 95F today before the storm hit, which is as hot as it's been this month. Torrential rainfall where I work with street flooding, and also some small hail. Didn't get as much where I live - had 0.47" in my gauge.

Disgustingly smokey in Saskatoon today. Thankfully it seems to have cleared up somewhat this evening, but it's supposed to persist for the next few days.

I don't recall having any significant periods of smoke the last couple of summers, probably because they started off rather wet, but 2018 (which was on the dry side) had several weeks of persistent smoke in August. This year's been quite dry as well, and with our continued well above average heat I think we're in for a decent amount of smoke and wildfires this time around, unfortunately.

Had a big downpour around 1.00am, woke me up and couldn't get back to sleep for 2 hours it was that loud on the roof.

Nice today, low 8.3C / high 21.4C and sunny. Felt "humid" with DP's around 11C, and before you laugh, remember I live in a hyperdry climate during a record gay year so fuck knows when the dewpoint was last over 10C. The cracked skin on my hands is already healing.

Come to think of it, I'm not jealous of NE Europe.. another drought & heat summer would have been awful for our forests, I really enjoy the lush look this year. If only the temps were a few degrees warmer (especially after that poor spring) and even more thunderstorms opposed to boring rain, this would be a great summer.

New UV record for Helsinki. Above UV 6 has been recorded 23 times so far, highest being 6.6, which rounds up to 7. Above 7 has been recorded only once, in the archipelago in June 2000 IIRC. Or was it 2001? Consistent UV recordings and stats only go back to the 90s, so the time of records is rather limited.

I suspect the trees and buildings surrounding the station may block a lot of the sun. I calculated the annual average for this station and it was ridiculously low (worse in winter than summer because the sun may not rise above the obstructions to the south during winter).

Amen to this. My only wish was to get a wet summer and the first half indeed fulfills my wishes. Totals since June 1st are already approaching the 300 mm mark a couple dozen km SE of me! It's great not to see the nature suffer like the past 3 years. It's actually my first wet summer since 2014 as I was living near Nice from 2014 to 2017, with disgusting bone dry med summers. Early to mid June was much better though as it was wet, warm and sunny, a much better combo than this lackluster July.

That being said, the past 3 summers have taken their toll. A lot of damage has been done and maybe half the spruces as well as many birches, beeches and even oaks have died from the repeated severe droughts. Is it the case in Germany as well?

Very wet month here too - over 80mm already which is ridiculous when our average for July as a whole is 50mm. But mostly from torrential downpours, so that's not a bad thing. For example, out of the 82mm that's fallen this month, 66mm fell on just 3 days (21mm on the 3rd, 29mm on the 6th, 16mm on the 12th). The landscape is nice and lush without being muddy (plenty of evaporating between downpours).

Beyond that, temps have been average to slightly above (21-23C during the day). Not sure about sunshine though - Leeming is at 46% of the average just under halfway through the month so probably pretty average too (but considering that's 45 miles away who really knows).

Finally another heatwave, just two 90 degree days up until now this July (both were 96). Marine layer burned off and sun came out, high/low of 91/70. Thankful to be in a drier pattern now as well. Could get storms from a cold front this weekend but then it's back to dry, just how summer should be.
