Nice cloudscapes today. Convective clouds are common in the UK in winter, especially in these NW'ly polar maritime airmasses.

While everyone is focusing on the Midwest and Northeast, China is getting some monstrous cold anomalies too! Guangzhou (Chinese city to the north of HK) has average highs of 18C in January...well the past two days it had highs of 7C and 5C! The freezing line the next few days will make a few raids into Southern China, almost reaching Vietnam
Shanghai which has 9C highs this point of year has not had a high over 4C since January 23rd. Taipei is gonna have highs of 10 to 12C for the rest of the week, and this is at a place which is just north of the Tropic of Cancer

This looks like Brownsville, Texas! mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/plot.php?station=ZGGG&network=CN__ASOS&prod=1&month=1&year=2018Two weeks ago 81°F highs, one week ago 72°F; 43°F a couple days ago. Look how smooth the temperature change is, very unlike North America. Taipei looks quite subtropical this month: mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/plot.php?station=RCSS&network=TW__ASOS&prod=1&month=1&year=2018

Gonna bookmark that website. Look at Shanghai. Havent been above 40F since the 23rd
Guangzhou at 23N hasn't been above 46F the past three days. Same latitude as Havana. Can you imagine this happening in Miami?
Beijing spent 8 days without rising above freezing. Hmm not sure how common that is there? In January 2016 they had an even more powerful cold blast, and even had a 9F high one day! Still, seems pretty uncommon for Beijing to spend that long below freezing
Seoul had 3 days with highs in the teens

^ Around 40F the past couple days, 39F is the coldest. It's the highs that are more impressive

January 2018 so far wins the award for "most boring month ever". Just 13 hours of sun, endless slate grey colder than average nothingness, no diurnal range at all. Thankfully most months aren't THIS boring. Desperately need a mild spell for a bit of balance but I hear even colder weather and snow is on the way again. Nice, you're basically getting my last December over and over again all winter. Fortunately January wasn't far enough above normal to lose snow cover, otherwise I'd be in the same mess.

What is with the winter heatwaves in LA? They've had about a week of 28+ days. And it's probably going to continue for another week.

Bardufoss, inland Troms, has been in the freezer for weeks now, with temps around -20 to -25°C /-4 to - 13°F - good for cold weather training for the Norwegian army, Royal Marines, Netherlands marines and US Marines currently there. Yesterday they experienced -27°C there. Today at 17:00: 5.3°C Must feel like a shockingly warm day up there... And is it warmer than Paris for once?

Yeah, I'd be shocked, especially considering 17:00 up there is after dark, but it's actually not as cold as I thought, I always pictured it being higher up and further inland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bardufoss#Climate5.4C is our highest temp for the month so far here and it might stay that way for a while, because February looks like it's going to be colder than average even if nothing that spectacular. This time of year I want either sun, snow or spring, 3C and overcast doesn't turn me on at this stage.

That is certifiably tropical weather on the 26th and 28th. The first few days of that month and a few random days sprinkled throughout that month are also noteworthy with the high diurnal ranges. Yekaterinburg and Kyzyl have interesting stats too Lommie
