As Verkhoyansk is in pretty much the easternmost part of the Eurasian continent, I decided to post a warm summer month period in the westernmost part of the Eurasian continent. And this is almost exactly the same latitude as Verkhoyansk! - 67 N, inside the Arctic Circle. Cant compete on extreme warm highs with a climate as continental as Verkhoyansk - but look at this below and it aint bad for a place near western coast at 67 N (a valley). The winters here is a piece of cake compared to Verkhoyansk...

I've started pretending that I have autism and am super biased toward my own climate, so don't take offense when I pick Bergen vs Lund

Ok Baba, good that you let us know that you are kidding Sorry for spamming this thread, but since I was kind of disappointed with the lack of warm summer months the last two summers...here is another location in Norway that period, this time at 64 N (Steinkjer)

Hey Strewthless and boombo, I see that Ponta Delgada recorded its coldest ever August high at 20.2°C on 2 August 1990, wasn't that only like a couple of days before that incredible NW England/NE Wales heat blast? Must've been some weird flip of wind patterns there, because that was weird

That was the exact same day that Hawarden recorded the record high for Wales. Makes it even weirded considering how dependent at least Scandinavia is on the Azores High to deliver strong south-westerlies in order to produce heat waves. Must've been a breakage of the chain somewhere for Ponta Delgada to be that cool and 5°C below average in that fall-asleep climate all out of a sudden

I'm thinking along the lines of such wind-patterns being a sort of a windtunnel effect of two competing north-south wind flows going in two straight patterns meticulously avoiding each other. So I'm thinking the southerlies just avoided some intense Greenlandic winds with strong intensity that made their way all the way down to the Azores that August day? Likely something similar in Shetland if that thing's true! Would also love to see proper documentation of that because even Shetland's interior is unknown to have hit 27°C with reliable measurements, and of course the hill in Lerwick is unknown to have hit the big 24°C!

Last below average (1961-1990): why are you using old decadal normals rather than 1981-2010? Anyway from here [Amherst, 1981-2010 normals]: January: 2018 February: 2015 March: 2017 April: 2016 May: 2017 June: 2017 July: 2009 August: 2017 September: 2013 October: 2009 November: 2017 December: 2017 My 1961-1990 normals are warmer than my 1981-2010 normals, oddly. Looks like it's mostly from the 90s being cold; I should check if it's a station quirk or a regional thing.

SMHI doesn't let you view monthly data from before 2002, and normals from "WMO's official reference period" which is 1961-1990 (though only 24h means are available for temperature). Really shitty.

Im wondering why Binghamton station is able to get below average temperatures these years much more often than surrounding cities like Rochester or New York City. It's bizarre. Maybe the population loss means that the station has less of a UHI compared to 30 years ago?

For NYC:
Jan: 2018....mean 31 (average mean 34) Feb: 2015....mean 24 (average mean 36) Mar: 2017....mean 41 (average mean 43) Apr: 2016....mean 51 (average mean 53) May: 2008....mean 61 (average mean 63) Jun: 2015....mean 71 (average mean 73) Jul: 2014.....mean 77 (average mean 78) Aug: 2017....mean 75 (average mean 77) Sep: 2013....mean 68 (average mean 70) Oct: 2015....mean 58 (average mean 59) Nov: 2017....mean 48 (average mean 49) Dec: 2017....mean 36 (average mean 39)
All very recent except May, however other stations have recorded a below average May as recently as 2017.

Y ears where both January and February hit 60 (16 C):1890, 1906, 1932, 1985, 2000, 2006, 2018. That’s an average of 1 in 21 years, but more common in recent years. Winters where all 3 months (D-J-F) all hit 60:1889-1890, 1984-1985, 1999-2000. Winter months that reached 70 (21 C):December 1875 January 1906 February 1906 February 1932 January 1950 December 1982 February 1997 December 2012 February 2018 Amazing how both January and February 1906 did it! Happens 1 in 16 years on average. Yes, neither December 2015 or February 2017 joined most of the northeast in reaching 70 BUT TODAY DID. February 2018 joins the list.
