Yeah I believe the 130°F more... Even below the NOWData summary table it says "Reliable observation times are not available prior to 1982"... That just means the observation time isn’t known ie it could be midnight-midnight or 7 AM-7 AM etc, has nothing to do with temp accuracy. That said I think the 134 is bs

We were discussing October record lows in the shoutbox, so I decided to look up the October record low of each state.
Alabama: 19 F / -7.2 C (Valley Head; October 26, 1919) A 16 F low was apparently reported in Demopolis on October 21, 1989, but that's likely bullshit as that's in the southern half of the state and mid teens are impossible in October there.
Alaska: -48 F / -44.4 C (Clearwater; October 31, 1975)
Arizona: -9 F / -22.8 C (Fort Valley; October 21, 1949)
Arkansas: 12 F / -11.1 C (Gravette; October 30, 1917)
California: -13 F / -25.0 C (White Mountain; October 29, 1971)
Colorado: -28 F / -33.3 C (Walden; October 27, 2020)

Things to note:
Only one state (Alaska) has hit -40 F / -40 C in October, which isn't that surprising.
Two states (4%) have hit -35 C / -31 F in October; Alaska and Wyoming.
Six states (12%) have hit -30 C / -22 F in October; Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.
22 out of 50 states (44%) have dropped to 0 F (-17.8 C) or below in October.
44 out of 50 states (88%) have dropped to at least -10 C (14 F) or below in October.
Easy to see that the Intermountain West has the most extreme October cold snaps relative to average.

Probably the most extreme "Cooler by the Lake" scenario in my 22 years in the Toronto area. Downtown Toronto is 12C cooler than Mount Forest, which is 150km northwest with higher elevation.

Pretty much all of last real winter in Cranbrook. There were other somewhat cold periods (like in February) but they were short and most of the time bookended by mild temps and no snow. November and March were total write-offs. Still enjoyed mid December to mid January though.

A fantastic, beautiful, marvellous hot day in Sheffield. 23 degrees!
Well that's hot enough for me, anyway.
Unfortunately, we have a bunch of dead storms coming up from Frogland tomorrow, which are forecast to be a blob of dead Cumulonimbus Extinctus that will blot out the sun all day making it cool and damp.

^^^ I'm glad I'm not alone in this regard. I've said that and I'll say that again: few things are more infuriating than seeing everyfuckenwhere else get heat and sunshine, when you're getting cold and overcast.

Saw an interesting map about what temperature 1/4 days are greater than (~91 days) and less than.
For here:
25th percentile: 50 f (10 c) 75th percentile: 80 f (27 c)
If we took those and used those daily average highs as a benchmark for seasons, we’d get:
Winter: November 23 to February 25 (95 days) Spring: February 26 to June 7 (102 days) Summer: June 8 to September 10 (95 days) Fall: September 11 to November 22 (73 days)
Those all seem like reasonable definitions, spring is definitely the longest season and fall the shortest.
————
Here’s Shitchester as a comparison:
25th percentile: 41 f (5 c) 75th percentile: 76 f (24 c)
Winter: December 9 to March 6 (88 days) Spring: March 7 to June 6 (92 days) Summer: June 7 to September 11 (97 days) Fall: September 12 to December 8 (88 days)
Seems a bit less reasonable with summer being longer than winter but nothing too off.

Here's proper weather station placement, in an open grassy field, far from pavement or trees, this is up to NWS ASOS standards
