🖕🏿Mörön🖕🏿 I think that app is kinda liberal in what it calls drizzle. For example it might be mostly sunny, but the radar could be picking up some tiny green specks of precip that aren't even reaching the ground, and it will still report that as "drizzle." Doesn't change the fact I saw drizzle here or that Shelton saw drizzle. Only logical to assume it drizzled in Seattle as well.

Been busy the last several days so haven't had time to do this summary but better late than never. Peak Temperatures across BC during June 2021 Heatwave... Thanks for doing this! Note1: Only highest temperature per city listed. The Victoria Gonzales station reached 39.8°C. Not sure if that's cherry-picking or not. ... Note3: Yoho National Park is 1,602m/5,256ft above sea level. Someone will have to verify this but 37.9C could be a record for that altitude and latitude. Could be. Always difficult when multiple parameters involved. Hendrickson Creek is further north (53°47') but slightly lower (1448 m) and scored 38.3°C.

edmountain , just edited the Victoria peak temp to reflect the reading at the Victoria Gonzales station. FWIW, if anyone else notices anything similar or any errors, just let me know and I'll edit the table accordingly.

Read an article on our national broadcaster which mainly focused on climate change and agriculture in Finland (it suffers because it's so dry and our crop variants are not used to it), but an expert was also asked if BC's recent heatwave would be possible in Finland. The expert replied no, but in the next 50 years, it's more of a question when and not if 40C will be recorded here.

So it turns out the Lytton NavCan AWOS (AKA CWLY) was upgraded in 2013: www.bcaviationcouncil.org/awos-upgrade-for-lytton-and-clinton/And it was at that exact time (August 2013) that a discontinuity was introduced. Prior to August 2013, the two were generally within 0.2°C of each other with CWLY (the NavCan AWOS) being slightly warmer. After August 2013, suddenly the ECCC measurements from CVLY were warmer with a very marked accentuation in summer. There's another smaller discontinuity in 2017 (that is also statistically significant) when the difference becomes even more pronounced. Here is a graph of the 90-day moving average for the difference CVLY minus CWLY that illustrates the two discontinuities. No idea what's going on but, whatever it is, it can't be good. Remember, the two stations are colocated and are ostensibly measuring the same thing. I'm going to compare with neighbouring stations to see if it's possible to figure out which station is introducing the artifact. One speculates that since CWLY was the station changed that it's the one with the artifact.

Keep in mind too that the ECCC one is the one in a Stevenson screen, and likely goes through more rigorous calibration than the NavCan one. Most locations where the ECCC station is at an airport can be compared to the corresponding NavCan stations present at airports

I wonder if you'll reach it before us? 40C would've probably been reached in 2018 if it hadn't have clouded over in the afternoon. We reached 36C in York, and could've seen 37C+ easily if it wasn't for the cloud. Whether we will see another heatwave so hot again any time soon is probably unlikely.

Given that the issues seem to clearly arise after the NavCan AWOS upgrade it seem far more likely that the problems lie there. I found this helpful Twitter thread with more detailed information about the ECCC and NavCan Lytton stations here: Most locations where the ECCC station is at an airport can be compared to the corresponding NavCan stations present at airports The weird thing is it seems that, unless I'm mistaken, there are some major cities that do not actually have ECCC stations at the airport: Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa for starters.

Impossible to say really, because in both cases the setup must be perfect. Even Moscow which has been prone to extreme heatwaves in the last 20 or so years have only managed a record of 39.0C.
