This satellite image was taken at 15.10 local time. The smoke is completely covering Lytton. Red dot is the fire location, and the blue dot is the approximate location of the lytton station.

What's the most northerly spot in the world to have reached 50C? Erbao Township near Turpan at 42.5 N has reached 50.5 ยฐC according to Wiki. No idea if this is true.

Can we have a picture from the ground, Babu? Or even a satpic from this century perhaps?

These are hourly images from the Lytton station, facing north-west (dirextly away from the fire). You can clearly see the ground becoming significantly darker compared to the brightness of the sky in the background from around 2pm. Especially on the 5pm image. The 49.6'C high was recorded at 5pm.

Plenty, plenty of blue sky in those pics, that smoke barely rates a mention. Just as I said. Looks like the ground is becoming darker because the sun is very clearly setting behind that hill. And before even that, the sky/ground are not getting darker from 2pm as you say, that's just the effect of the declining elevation of the sun as seen from that high latitude location. You fail.

Oh really, the sun setting behind a hill at 2pm? How interesting. This is 1pm vs 2pm looking NW and South from the lytton station. Nw: And South: Both the camera to the NW and the camera to the south went dark at the same time, which rules out the hypothesis that the darkening would be due to the sun starting to shine into the camera causing an underexposure.

On that note, just want to grind my axe that the good moderators at CD took down all my photos of BC hot spots because they were "copyrighted" when in fact they were all Creative Commons. Every time I come out of my cave back there I am given a new reason to go back into hibernation.

Probably. It's certainly true that 200+ people have died suddenly in BC over a 4 day period. This compares to the usual rate of about 15 per day in BC from sudden cardiac death ( source). Throw in a few other causes of non-cardiac sudden death (pulmonary embolism, stroke, aortic dissection, etc) and the rate might be about 20 per day or 80 for four days. Let's round up to 100 over the 4-day period assuming the rate goes up a bit in the summer. So the rate of sudden death seems to have doubled during the heat wave. But it's just a small sample of 4 days where natural variation can be more prominent so it could theoretically still be coincidence.

Does anyone know the exact location of the station that hit 49.6ยฐC?
Even though the whole event was undoubtedly beyond extraordinary and record breaking, with several >47ยฐC readings, that mark strikes me as a bit too high compared to the immediate surroundings. I see there are two stations in Lytton, named โLytton climateโ and just โLyttonโ, with โLytton climateโ having highs significantly higher than โLyttonโ, which was on the other hand more on par with the likes of Ashcroft or Lillooet.
Not dismissing Lytton climateโs mark, but I think it deserves further examination regarding to why it got such figures.

The station in question is the Lytton Climate one as you say. I believe it's this one: goo.gl/maps/qqPEabbovZCbwRjd8Edit: the labeling on Google maps is wrong. Should say CVLY and not CWLY.

Actually, I'm confused. That's the location of the Lytton NavCan station. The coordinates for the Lytton Climate station place it in the middle of nowhere up on a surrounding hill. That doesn't seem right either.I'm so messed up. The pin on the map below is for the Lytton NavCan station (CWLY). The other pin on the maps in the other post are for the Lytton Climate station (CVLY). It doesn't help that the labeling on Google maps used the wrong identifier. Temps still in the 40s in the Thompson-Okanagan region today. Two major fires of note - one northwest of Kamloops and one near Lillooet.
