Thought I'd take the liberty of starting this one! Sorry for files that are Fucking Huge(tm). A warm day to start off autumn on Thursday - doesn't feel like fall when it's 87 F (31 C) inside my non-AC apartment! (feat. my hands haha) The dark sky a few minutes ago, as a thunderstorm/downpour was moving on in - was some rumbling going on at the time

Climbed Mt. Evans on Sunday (8/58). Distance: 5.7 miles Time: 5 hours Summit elevation: 14,268’ Starting elevation: 12,850’ Not the best 14er but it was still pretty and the easiest access one left. Left at 2:15 AM, it’s only a 2.5 hour drive which isn’t bad. You can drive to the summit but that’s lame, I wanted to hike it. The road is scary, no shoulder or guardrails and steep dropoffs. Mostly drive in the oncoming lane and moved over and stopped when a car passed. Got on the trail at 4:45 AM and hiked up a decent trail. Got lost a bit in the dark but found some other guys who knew where to go. One was from Rochester and worked with one of my friends! What a small world! Very nice sunrise looking down at Denver: > < Nice light: > < Once you got over Mount Spaulding at 13,800’ it was a slog. Had to descent to a saddle and then the rest of the hike was an interminable ridge. I couldn’t see the summit and was barely going up so feels like I was making no progress at all, very annoying. Also quite rocky and slow going, not even fun scrambling. Got to the tourist summit a bit after 7 AM. The parking lot and buildings meant there was no panoramic view but still nice. Nice wildlife! Scrambled up to the true summit, this was the funnest part of the hike: > < Looking down at the tourist summit and it’s various structures—an observatory, historic building and bathrooms: > < Looking at Mt. Biersadt (the peak to the left) and the sawtooth ridge that connects it to Evans. Could’ve done them both back in 2020 but didn’t want to risk the class 3 scramble on the sawtooth. > Lakes below Bierstadt (now on the right) < You can see Longs Peak to the north: > < Pretty lakes on the way down: > < Looking back up at Mt Evans from the end of the hike. Had to traverse all the way along the far side of that ridge—can see how it’s tedious:

Steelernation Sweet area. I wanted to go to Evans in 2015 but the road was so badly damaged by all the precipitation that it was closed.

Some photos from September so far. Weather was 21C with dry air, so it felt like somewhere out west, which was a nice change from the east coast humidity. Tons of old man's beard on this branch

Behind on photos, went camping in the Medicine Bow national forest up in Wyoming last weekend. Nice view of the ridge over the lake: We didn’t make it up to the really scenic part but still did a nice hike. Storm clouds moving in > < Had 3 rounds of thunder/hailstorms Saturday afternoon and overnight. Too bad it was when I was camping because the storms were epic. Hail: > < Cleared up Sunday morning. Cute cabin across the lake, looks very northern: > <

Nothing says 'late dry season Darwin' than pics of the desolate terrain only 2klm from the city CBD ( the old Salonika railway crossing ). Not a blade of green grass to be seen. I'll take some pics in 3 months time for comparison after 20" of rain.

Went to the arboretum yesterday. September has been very cold though, especially in the beginning, so fall colors peaked earlier than normal this year. It was already a bit past peak outside of the city. Still pretty beautiful though. We've been meaning to go to the arboretum for a while now, but the last three weekends have all been rainy. Luckily we were both off this monday which actually saw some sunlight for the first time in a couple weeks. Oddly enough it seems birches have held on to their leaves and colors rather well in proportion to other tree species. Same place October 5th 2019, a year when September was 1'C below average and reached -5.2'C: Actually, 2020 is the only year that hasn't had a significantly below average September since 2018. Surprising actually how big the difference is compared to 2019 despite both Septembers having the same mean temperature, and 2019 having even colder record minimums. That year the first half of the month was relatively warm though, whereas this year's September had the coldest mean temps in the first half of the month, both in absolute terms as well as relative terms. Definitely gloomier this year too. What a shit September it's been. Here you can see the deterioration of September (the average lines are since 1980, at 13.8/5.2 vs the 1991-2020 average of 14.4/5.1)
