Just remembered I took some photos from the top of the hospital building on Sep 27th. The hill in the horizon directly above the river is the same hill in the last two photos in my previous post, about 3km west of the city border and about 11 km from where this photo was taken. Umeå is a very sprawly city by Swedish and European standards. The largest end-to-end span is 12 km, whereas Uppsala with a 80% higher urban population has 13km. Lund, which is the exact same size as Umeå, has a maximum span of only 7km. The river island had already started getting bare trees by Sep 27th.

Wetterhorn part 1: (gonna do a separate post just for the aspens) Climbed Wetterhorn peak last Sunday. Was a 7 hour drive so drove down Saturday. The dude I was doing it with gave me a ride up the very rough 4wd road to the trailhead Sunday. The 4wd road was much scarier than climbing the peak despite the high exposure. Distance: 7.0 miles Summit elevation: 14,021’ Trailhead elevation: 10,840’ Time hiking: 6 hours Started off at only 23 f but was had clear, blue dome skies and warmed up quickly, was in the 50s by the end. The first 2.5 ish miles were on a very nice gradual trail. > Started in the trees: Then entered a big tundra basin, Wetterhorn is the peak in the middle < Passed through a rock field then climbed steeply up to the ridge. Stunning views opened up in all directions. On the ridge looking up at the “yellow dirt” section and the peak behind it: > < The yellow dirt section was very steep and slippery but relatively short, a bit beyond that the fun begins. The last part of the climb is class 3 rock scrambling. Definitely a step up from the typical rock scramble at the end of peaks as you could die from a fall and hands were needed most of the time. Couldn’t just walk and put them down for balance. The first section of scrambling, this part had less exposure but had a few tricky moves. > < That section was longer than expected but then we climbed through a notch, walked down a slab and came to a stunning, dramatic ledge before the final summit pitch. All the pictures of the ledge have me or my climbing partner in it so look it so look it up here (picture 21)
The final pitch was very exposed but easy, felt like climbing a ladder, on the descent we could even face outward so not quite rock climbing. > Looking up: Looking down: < Finally made it to the summit where there were awesome, panoramic views in all directions. There were the whole way, but i waited on posting them until here. Cool looking peaks and ridges: > Endless sea of rocky, tundra peaks. Several other 14ers in this view: < The distant mountains to the right are near Moab! Looking at Uncompaghre peak: > And back to where we came from with some aspens: < Retraced our steps on the descent. > Neat ridgeline: Back in the trees: < It’s the most fun and most scenic 14er I’ve done so far, definitely worth the drive and can see why its many people’s favorite.

2 weeks late but here’s some aspen picks from the drive back from Lake City. Pictures don’t do them justice though. Aspen slope: The 4wd road went right through a ton of them. The 2nd pic is back where I parked my car. > < This hillside was carpeted with them: > < Another slope: > <

More aspens from a hike last Sunday, this time in the foothills near Red Feather Lakes: Distance: 5.0 miles Time: 3 hours Max elevation: 8,300’ Min elevation: 7,900’ Aspens hadn’t quite peaked here yet as it was lower down but still gorgeous. Aspens with newly snowcapped peaks in the background: > < Aspens below one of the many rocky hills in the area: >

Pics from Bali and nearby Gili Trawangan: Local fauna Some monument in Denpasar (largest city on the island) Noice High up in the central highlands near the town of Bedugul (1300 m ish asl) Descending a bit to around 700 m asl. Gorgeous landscapes there: Loads of cocos despite the altitude Always gloomy when you approch the central volcanoes. Even if it's the dry season, rain is frequent on the windward SE side of the mountains. Back on the SW shores. Hot and windy. Indiana Jones vibes from this temple near Ubub (central Bali) The Great Bali Duck migration. Lots of wooden artifacts inspired by these ducks on local "craft" markets. High up in the mountains again Some forest hermitage there Local fauna #2 The sound of cicadas was LOUD Distant convection Hmmm good thing this bridge got replaced On Gili Trawangan, the island in the background is Lombok. The highest mountain on Lombok is the Rinjani volcano (3726 m / 12,224 ft), visible in the morning before convection builds. Quite a few deciduous trees there, bare as it's the the dry season. Deffo much less lush than most of Bali as there's no relief to speak of on these small islands. Looks like winter, even if it doesn't feel so. Random guy admiring the sun setting behind Bali's highest volcano, the Agung (3031 m / 9,944 ft), about 60 km / 40 mi away iirc: Gotta rush back to the hotel as twilight doesn't last long at 8° S. Now hearing the muezzin. Contrary to the Hindu-majority Bali, Lombok and its neighboring islands are Muslim, like most Indonesia. Back in Bali. Lol @ this sign. Doesn't really show, but it was an incredibly windy evening. Temple full of instagramers Local fauna #3 Lots of ceremonies happening regularly in one of the thousands of temples on the island. This one is the Besakih temple, the holiest of them all. The Batur volcano caldeira in the center-north of the island: Back near Ubud Cute one Large waves on the SW shores. Wouldn't bathe in that, I know what it leads to since my stay on the Riviera. Proud Indonesian Wetterhorn part 1: (gonna do a separate post just for the aspens) I definitely prefer the looks of these mountains compared to the Front Range! Annoying it's so far away. What is the most scenic range in CO in your opinion?

🖕🏿Mörön🖕🏿 I saw a bear run up the road on the way to the Wetterhorn trailhead! rozenn I agree, the San Juans are more rugged and rocky than the front range. It was definitely the most scenic 14er I’ve done. As for prettiest range in Colorado overall, I’d say the Elks near Aspen. It’s home to the Maroon bells which are the classic Colorado postcard view. Nice pics of Indonesia too, not really my kind of scenery but neat to see what that area of the world looks like and certainly different than anything I’ve seen.

A rare pic at any time in AU, let alone in the Spring month of October. The southern NSW coast near Bermagui showing surf at the beach and snow on the hills inland ( pic from a couple of days ago. )

Driving between Alexandria and Monroe, LA yesterday. Some foliage is turning. Maybe dryness is contributing. Sky was clear with temps in the 80's and low humidity with DP around 40F. Lots of pines with rolling hills.

Yesterday I witnessed a peculiar phenomenon while it was raining. I take it this phenomenon is especially widespread in Taiwan.
