Gonna be a long wait for the wet... About 5 months... might get 2 or 3 showers before the first storms of late Sept/early Oct.

11C seems rather chillly for Gunn Point in May. How far inland is the station? Funny you should ask... my son only an hour or so ago also questioned the reading... he thought the AWS is playing up. The site itself is probably only a mile as the crow flies from the coast on a peninsular, so it does come across as being a bit on the low side....otoh, an Admin bloke, Nikko, ( Pilko's Chat On weather FB Group ) lives about 600 meters from the BoM's AWS and his Davis 2 reads within 0.2c of the official equipment consistantly both max and min temps at all times of the year. So, yeah, likely legit.... *EDIT: well I think the instrumentation is playing up... the DP's and RH% are deffo not right, so I'm also now questioning the min this morning ( although it is plausible with other sites on the outskirts of Darwin recording 12c mins ) Surely thatโs gotta be close to a record monthly low? 12S and right on the coast and gets to 11C. station is 1.5km from the coast maps.app.goo.gl/FG9u5FUhoPqW62Zt6?g_st=ic

But a quick check of coastal sites, I can't find a colder May min A blackfella community called Milingimbi has had an 11.7c in May 1967 ( 12.11*S ) Point Fawcett on the Tiwi Islands has recorded 12.0c in May 2006 ( 11.76* )

See this ? my downstairs beer fridge that I've had since 2010. This fridge is a better PWS than a Davis 2... Why you might ask ? Well, every dry season, at some stage, it manages to partially freeze the beers stored in it ( never less than 24 in there ... lol ) So today, this arvo, I pulled out a can of beer and the fucker was partially frozen ! This is the earliest time in the dry season there has ever been ice in my beer !! Quite simply unprecedented to have icy beer outta this fridge in the second week of May. An indication of low mins and DP's that official BOM instruments simply cannot replicate.... Ice in the can ! ( shock/horror !! ) Mind you, we warmed up to 32.4c at 3.09pm...

The 18.3c recordings were under cloud and rain on both occaisions . In May 1959 -11.4mm and in July 1968 nearly 40mm fell over 4 days of a North West Cloud Band, a reasonably uncommon rain event from the Indian Ocean. The June 2007 low max temps were under overcast conditions, but no rain fell. The June 2007 cold outbreak in Tropical Australia, from WA, NT and to the QLD coast set many records, with some inland towns recording sub 10c max temps. Darwin this day maxed out at 22.7c !

My son is out in Arnhemland working on a roadworks job between Maningrida and Ramingining.... they were rained off yesterday. Beautiful forest in that first pic there, although it does look a bit unwelcoming.

Here is the bugger responsible for our cold spell... big kick arse high sitting over the Bight.... being an anti cyclone the winds in the system move in an anti clockwise direction. hence the clear skies and cooler gusty south easterly winds along with DP's below 10c... Very dry conditions atm as the gardeners amongst us will know. A very cold morning ( for May ) deep into Northern AU. Camooweal in far northwest Queensland, fell to a low of 3.5ยฐC, which was 10.2ยฐC below the May average. Victoria River Downs, in the northern NT, had a chilly low of 5.7ยฐC, which was also 10.2ยฐC below the May average. Bushfires are now a feature of the Darwin rural areas.
