No rain for 3 weeks and counting... No relief in sight to the drought. It still looks good thanks to the wet April and first few days of May... Outside of forests, things are beginning to look parched. And to think these cold snap-inducing synoptics never show up in winter...

American Avocet and its reflection One of my favorite birds here, theyโre so silly looking and entertaining little fellows.

Went for a hike last Sunday (June 3rd). In the foothills about 30 minutes west, the foothills are definitely growing on me, especially this time of year. Overlooking the parking lot: Trail winded its way up and along a stream, going in and out of forest. The riparian area and the brush were pretty lush and green: > < Eventually came out into a burned area from the 2020 Cameron Peak fire. Green underbrush is doing quite well though. > < Neat rock formationโthe foothills are underrated for cool rocky cliffs: > <

Went for a hike in Rocky Mountain national park this morning: Saw this moose: Lots of low clouds so much of the views were obscured. Mountain views were limited to the base of the peaks or the very tops peaking through: > < Nice valley: > <

Since May 21 here, just 0.05โ of rain has fallen despite the mild temperatures, due to a persistent northerly flow. These mild, dry conditions are quite rare here, especially in spring and summer. Shitty smoky weather from last Wednesday. At least you can tell itโs been dry with the golden grass. Went down to the beach during the height of the smoke, temp of about 70ยฐF, smoke limited high temps. Looked apocalyptic of course socked in orange haze and smelled as if I were next to a campfire. The pathetic, smoked out sun Interesting skies before the smoky week, this just before the shitty maritime front came thru on June 2

As I was in Jura for work last Thursday, I paid a visit to one of the most potent low altitude frost hollows in France (went down to -36.4ยฐC/-34ยฐF this January despite a rather mild winter overall). Gentle landscape in the vincinity: The sinkhole is located in the forest on the horizon, about where the cumulus congestus cloud is located: This is supposedly the small town in France. Ok, why not. In the forest after I parked my car closer to the sinkhole. Rather unpleasant walk as loads of aggressive flies swarmed me as soon as I got out of the car. Can make out a glade. There's a newly installed thermometer there: Beautiful and quiet place. Even the flies didn't venture much into the glade. The main sinkhole: A cold air pool was beginning to form, I could feel a (very) gentle katabatic breeze while sitting still mid-slope: Sinkhole where water flows into karstic underground network What looks like dwarf spruces around where the reversed treeline lies. As one gets closer to the bottom of the frost hollow, conditions get too severe in summer for trees to grow correctly. It's basically a small subarctic enclave. Small crays on the slopes of the deepest part of the frost hollow. THe name of the phenomenon elapses me, but I've read that these rock formations are related to the extreme temperature fluctuations witnessed there. Another sinkhole: Mooh! Another overview Much milder getting back into the forest To the left is where I come from. One can see the slope: Noice Some uninhabited house. Creepy. Decided to have dinner there. Getting back to the car through dark and silent woods. By then the cold air pool was more mature. One could feel a large drop in temps within a few steps, probably around 10ยฐC. Some mist was forming. The dew point in stations located outside the frost hollow was around 3ยฐC, so it must have been around freezing then. I was cold walking thru with my short sleeves and short pants, coming from 30ยฐC+ Lyon and Paris. Looking at temperature readings from nearby Amburnex sinkhole, it went from around 17ยฐC at 7 pm to 2ยฐC at 10 pm and crossed the freezing mark just after 11 pm. Low was -3.6ยฐC/26ยฐF the morning after. Refreshing knowing that central Paris wasn't getting below 20ยฐC most nights.

It is also dry in my area. Yesterday, 27-28c, more clouds in the afternoon when I took this photo. Yesterday at 5 pm, sun shining through the haze but no rain.

Somewhat ironically... somewhere in Tallinn today. This is neither Venice nor a broken river dam, just a water main failure. The photo from media.

This look already counts as a Mediterranean climate to desiccatedi85 Lol no it doesn't, that's just a regular temperate forest (tree coverage is way too dense for Mediterranicity) but suburban in summer. Looks very similar to how it is here (except for some different tree species) this time of year actually.

I've seen denser forest in coastal California, though obvious in a spot with high annual rainfall

Redden the dirt in those photos and it'd look like some of the roads around here.
