Went for a walk. Found raspberries. Most were not quite ripe yet.
Lmao, this birch and spruce were literally growing in symbiosis. The trunks were as close as possible not being the same organism:

Cold front from a couple days ago. Sorry for the shitty foreground. Intense rainfall rates under that bad boy.

Went on an evening trip to the Wilmy area last Tuesday (the 8th), so I figured I'd come to the Sugarloaf Trail, part of Carolina Beach State Park. I was hoping to encounter some flytraps, but those things are tiny and it was my fault for not spending enough time to observe one of these things. Temps were in the lower 90s at the time, I could feel the transition between the onshore flow at the immediate coast (dewpoints felt like the upper 70s) and the dry downsloping westerly flow with lower 70s dews...lol.

Very nice pine trees there. Looks dry as fuck there though compared to here. Much more lush here.

Climbed Grays and Torreys peaks on Sunday. Distance: 10.5 miles Hiking time: 6.5 hours Summit elevation: 14,275’ (Grays) Trailhead elevation: 10,765’ Elevation gain: 4,100’ Was going to do a scrambling route along a ridge but the route looked too confusing to do alone so just did the easy standard route along a trail. Woke up at 3:45 AM and climbed in dark for awhile. Was already at 13,500’ when the sun came up. Fiery sunrise: > < Summited Grays at about 6:25 AM. Not the greatest view but pretty with the sunrise. Was windy and small so just snapped some pictures and headed down to the saddle. Got down to the saddle then headed up Torreys, reaching the summit at 7:20 AM. Views opened up and Torreys had a much more panoramic summit view and it was a nicer spot to hang out. Views from the top of Torreys—notice the snow patches, usually snow is all melted off in August: > Could see some ski runs and the towns around Lake Dillon. < Nice connector trail back from Torreys was added a few years ago so you don’t have to resubmit Grays. Nice thing about starting in the dark is the way down feels totally new. Cool imposing cliffs: > < Looking back—Grays left, Torreys right. Technical Kelso ridge is to the right of Torreys. > <

Indonesia Trip 6 days in Java: Jakarta, Yogyakarta. Weather Jakarta: hot, sunny, quite breezy in the afternoons. Yogyakarta: decidedly cloudier, a tad cooler, nicer breeze. National monument Largest mosque in the southern hemisphere. Huuuge. Old town, personal highlight of Jakarta. Yogyakarta - more laid back, chill, not as chaotic driving. Walked across the city to the water palace, highly recommend checking it out. Temples: took a scooter from Yogyakarta - Borobudur (55-60 minutes). Borobudur - Palembang (80-90 minutes) and Palembang - Yogyakarta (20-30 minutes). Fucking awesome day, felt like I was back to backpacking again. Indonesia traffic is whack as but it was great to be weaving in and out of trucks and cars with minimal road rules ahahaha. Boroburdor Palembang Me and my snake

I’m bored so finally posting these: From July 10th—left foco and drove to the Medicine Bow national forest in southern Wyoming, only about a 1.5 hour drive. Got there late so only did a 3.5 mile hike. Imposing view of the snow range: Looking down the range > < Neat view of a peak over one of dozens of alpine lakes: > < Herd of elk with a random moose and baby on the drive back to my campsite: > < Next day I did a longer hike, this one was a little over 7 miles. Cool pointy peak and lake: > < Can see why it’s called the snowy range: > < Eventually the trail left the main massif and descended into a lush, meadowy area: > < Looking back at Medicine Bow Peak—the highest in the range at 12,085’. I climbed it in 2018. > < Looking back at more stunning alpine lakes, the peaks in the background are in Colorado. You can see ice and snow in the lakes. >

July 12th I went to the dinosaur museum in Thermopolis, WY then did a scenic drive through the Bighorn range. Cool rock formations: > < Waterfall: > < 2 separate moose sightings within about 15 minutes > < Neat view overlooking the Bighorn Basin: > < The next day I drove the Beartooth Highway, my favorite road in the country, and through Yellowstone. Classic view from the Beartooth: More stunning views: > < Bison on the side of the road: > < Huge herds of bison in the Lamar Valley > < Mammoth hot springs—one of the least interesting thermal areas in Yellowstone but I was right there and hadn’t been to it in awhile.

Far from my place - in South America, Buenos Aires. These pics should be under the Fall thread, I know. But ok, the weather was also not that perfect.

After Yellowstone, I drove up to Canada and camped in a provincial park in southern Alberta. It was incredibly smoky so there was no visibility although I’d have assumed the views were nice. I spent the next afternoon in Canmore, a very nice mountain town—nicer than both Banff and Jasper. Camped near there in Bow Valley provincial park. Nice views from the campground: > < Picked up my parents at the Calgary airport the next day and we spent the afternoon in Canmore and went for a short evening hike in Bow Valley. We then went to Lake Louise the 17th but it was cold and rainy so we didn’t do any hiking. We did make it to the Peyto Lake overlook in the evening, which had stunning views even if it wasn’t a hike. Weather was much better the next day so we were able to hike. Lake Louise: > < First part of the hike was really crowded, likely due to the teahouses only a few miles in. After the teahouses, the crowds thinned out and the views got better. > < The trail then switchbacked sharply up to a ridge called the beehive. Looking down at Lake Agnes > < Glaciated peaks came into view along the ridge. > < The trail ended at a vantage point over Lake Louise, the chateau kind of ruined the view though. It was also very hazy in this direction. Tons of Clark’s nutcrackers trying to steal people’s lunches. Cute birds with no zero concern. > < On the way down, we climbed to the little beehive which also had nice, although hazy views. All together it was 6.9 miles and a nice intro to the Canadian Rockies. Since it got dark so late, we had plenty of time to kill after the hike and did a scenic drive up the Icefields Parkway. On the drive, we saw the first bear of the trip! > <
