I got a picture of the solstice midday sun today. Quite feeble and no snow doesn't help.

I hate how clean the air is in northern Sweden. Even in the city. This is what a clear sky looks like here when the sun is 0.1° below the horizon. Boke! 🤮 And these are at similar sun angles in Greece. For us to have any kind of sunset, we need to have clouds as close to the horizon as possible without actually touching the horizon. Like this morning we had a decent one purely thanks to the clouds (sun angle about -1°) Especially around the solstices one positive is that the sun stays between -2 and 2° for like 6 hours

tall high rises for what I assume is not a big town? No. And lol, I didn't know it but as I looked up what the highest building in Umeå is, I found out that's the one (in the last picture). It's only 52m. It's even the tallest in the entirety of Norrland (which is like 75% of Sweden)

Turku's tallest building is the Cathedral, 86m.
The tallest housing building is 58m.

US doesn't do residential high rises outside of bigger cities. That image of the Umeå high rises remind me of Canada.

High street in Nyköping at 16:08 on 22 December... nice lights! From the bridge over Nyköpingsån (small river) looking south at 15:48, in the hinterland between downtown and the harbour this, quite amusing the gap between the two centres of town.

This was right before the noon. This was right at the noon 40 minutes later. I noticed that it was a little hazy which is odd and unheard of at this time of the year. Then, I kid you not, not even 15 minutes later it looked like this and was snowing. What kind of Texan changeability is this? And an overcast sky with sunshine like this probably isn't very common where you live. High res

Today was a sunny Christmas Eve. I wonder when the last time that happened was. Still, the sun isn't very strong. This was just before noon and I counted my shadow as being about 38 meters. Dog. Barely makes it over the horizon. Also note how lame the sky looks compares to for example in Greece. Barely any color shift at all. This was pretty cool. So it was really windy yesterday, and so these footsteps pressurized the snow enough so that they wouldn't blow away in the wind, which has made them protrude. I actually think they're deer tracks too. Looks pretty weird with the horizontal sunlight. Speaking of deer tracks... Anyone want to sit down and take a fika? I feel like it's been a while since I've seen so strong colors. Overcast winter days are pretty much black and white. You can even almost see that the pines are green! I don't know if these roses are wild or not. They almost have a tree-like shape though. Weird. This apple tree has got its apples left even though this seems to have been the windiest last quarter of a year in a long time. Christmas dog. Full res:

Few more pics from a cloudy -5C morning in Central Park: Campus covered in snow: And here's a strange cloud pattern I saw back on Feb 20th back in Austin (it's not winter 2017-18 but whatever). Anyone know what these are? Temp was 20C:

Sunny and (surprising) still quite white Xmas in here today. This is the second time in my whole life that I see snow resist on the ground at my altitude (about 650 m) for so long, for us it is quite remarkable.

I visited relatives in the rural east today. There was some snow cover but the weather was just as snotty as here. Roads were basically wet ice. This winter is done, can't wait for spring.

Something I really like in the winter, unlike snow, is freezing fog. This was a cold day, brrrr I think this birch has finally died. It's been looking pretty unhealthy, losing its leaves far before any other tree, getting them far later etc. Now it's covered by a multiple centimeter thick layer of ice, and there's a huge crack in the ice that's about 2m long and continues through the wood even where there's no ice. Looks like the tree has burst open. Full res:
