Anthony Cornelius Meteorologist: It looks like Mother Nature missed the memo that Spring is meant to be warmer than Winter! The patterns couldn't be more opposite than a couple of weeks ago when the airmass was generally 10-12C above average and now we're seeing cool weather anomalies of the same magnitude, just below average! In all fairness, bursts of cold air in September are by no means unusual and quite normal (as is the expected snow in the alpine areas) - it just feels like more of a shock because of the unusual burst of heat we had in the last week of winter. However late-season frosts can still cause a headache for farmers. For those of you who (like me), don't like the cold weather - don't fear! Warmer weather will return later next week as the southerly influence subsides. I've attached an 850mb anomaly chart from Weatherwatch MetCentre.

Seoul has a 28.0C mean halfway thru September. According to Cadeauโs chart, this would make it tied for the 5th warmest August in history
So yes, weโre having record breaking summer in the fall

Dipped dangerously close to the freezing point this morning in the local frost hollows, with 1.1ยฐC/34ยฐF in Fontainebleau. Seoul has a 28.0C mean halfway thru September. According to Cadeauโs chart, this would make it tied for the 5th warmest August in history So yes, weโre having record breaking summer in the fall Man how tired of the heat I would be. Enough is enough.

Global Sea Surface Temperature (As of 14 September 2024)Anomaly Explains why Korea has been so hot lately. I originally planned a trip to Korea at this time, which didnโt end up happening due to personal circumstances. I thought it would have been pleasantly warm and past the peak of the summer heat, but looks like I was wrong. September so far there has really been something.

It's been five weeks since OKC has had more than a trace of rainfall, and the Norman mesonet site has had a measly 0.03" (0.8 mm). I'm glad the oppressive heat of summer is past, but I'm craving rain. It doesn't have to be a ton, just a quarter inch on a day that stays cloudy most of the time would make me happy.

NSW & Victoria: Coldest September Morning in Years ( Source: Weatherwatch ) It was cold enough here in Queensland for me with a low of 9.7C - but there were some truly impressively cold minimums this morning across NSW including -8C in Cooma and nearly -7C in Canberra!! This meant that some locations had their coldest September morning in more than a decade ๐ฅถ Monday September 16, 2024: Large areas of NSW and parts of Victoria woke up to a frosty morning, with temperatures plunging to their lowest September minimums in years. A few notable locations included: The standout figure comes from Wagga Wagga, which dropped to -3.4ยฐC, the coldest September morning in the town since 1966โa remarkable 58 years. Victoria Notable Minimums: Omeo: -4.6ยฐC (coldest since 2018, when it reached -5.0ยฐC) Hopetoun: -2.4ยฐC (coldest since 2019, when it reached -2.9ยฐC) In Victoria, not to be outdone, it was a chilly start here also โ though yesterday morning, Albury Airport fell to -2.2C, which was their coldest September morning on record! A "Late" Cold Spell for September: These freezing conditions were driven by a succession of upper cold pools of air that induced low pressure systems in the Tasman Sea. This saw a chilly, southerly airmass pushed northwards with clear skies and lower humidity contributing to the cold, frosty start. While it's not unusual for frosts to occur in September โ it is a little later than normal, previous September cold snaps (particularly 2012 and 2018) saw their cold temperatures occur earlier in September. ^^850mb temperatures on Thursday showing warm air across Queensland & northern NSW, though a cool airmass will persist across the south. Source: Weatherwatch MetCentre Later this week, a warmer airmass will begin to push back into Queensland and northern NSW, though southern NSW and Victoria may not warm up more significantly until the following week.
