^ I know, I'm so happy And what a convenient time to do a trip up to Quebec to experience the brunt of it.

Bing doesn't look too cold, but definitely depressing with endless clouds in the forecast. Also while it's not anything crazy, it's gonna be consistently below average until January 6th at the very least. Oh well, if there is anytime that extreme cold is okay, it's December and January, definitely better than getting this late in the winter Five more months. Five more months. Five more months

gah. I meant to say happy you're NOT in Bing. I skip negative often It's not even the cold in Bing that's the killer. Rather the depressing clouds day after day. NYC feels a lot happier in the winter cause at least we get sunshine here

I know; used to live near there. But it's been a while. Sometimes would enjoy the interesting clouds when it wasn't fully overcast but mostly cloudy

December 2017 rocked!

Here's the airmass at the peak of the cold. -20°C 850 hPa temperatures; my coldest arctic air outbreak [Feb 13, 2016] was -30°C. Cold centered rather far east, aiming towards Quebec rather than centered in the Upper Midwest; well it's centered of Minnesota tomorrow moves east fast.

I think it's the cloudiest city east of the Rockies But nearby towns are rather grim, too. Say, Ithaca. Or Cortland. Binghamton is a bit worse, but not by much. This webpage lists Elkins, WV as much worse www1.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/ccd-data/pctposrank.txt

Still not crazy impressive. Maybe we're a tad too far south from the core of the cold. Not sure if it'll be windy which could keep the temps higher. If winds are calm and there's snow on the ground, maybe it'll get colder. No snow on the ground at the moment, but there will be by tomorrow.

I think my map is showing the cold isn't going that far south. Plenty in northern New England right by the Canadian border. Lancaster, NH: -3°F/-23°C [-19°C/-31°C] on Thursday. Probably won't even break any records up there.

Buffalo is worse too. At least I didn't go to Syracuse University?

Yeah I checked and apparently Syracuse is even worse, only gets 2100 annual sunshine hours, which is ridiculous. Buffalo is worse too. At least I didn't go to Syracuse University? closer to the Great Lakes, which create lake effect cloud in the winter and spring. Binghamton gets less of that, but it sits in the valley on the edge of the Appalachians [Catskills] which traps clouds. Thought Binghamton would still be worse

I should just move to Upstate NY. One of the best winter climates in the country. Syracuse's sunshine hours are probably inflated.

Thought Binghamton would still be worse True the valleys do a lot of damage to Binghamton's climate, creating like a tunnel for the clouds. I'm honestly surprised that Syracuse is worse too, I've heard even from other Upstaters that Binghamton feels particularly cloudy for the region. But Syracuse has pretty crappy geography too, being directly to the southeast of the Great Lakes...probably gets a lot of lake effect clouds

Feels like we get 220 annual sunshine hours, not 2200 lol

The sun eventually comes out there… it might hide away for one week or two but then you'll see it. Late winter is better than early winter in my experience. Sun doesn't last long at all in December
