snow might be possible at sea level in South Texas this week between 25* and 28* north. wonder if northern Mexico could get freezes in some places? Probably in the higher elevation areas.

So California is dry again this winter, even Seattle is getting a dry week and a half. Danger of a similar setup as 2013-15. Ridiculously Resilient Ridge is back! Partly responsible for California's worst drought; and the coldest winter month [or close to it] in the Northeast in at least 100 years. Southern California is in flames again

I got this image from Cambium on CD, but I really like it. Good summary of the week and shows a typical American winter pattern: warm pushing back and forth in the south and then really pushed fast north right before a strong cold front. Harder for New England to get warm air in this setup

It's looking good for January finally. I'm just glad the Pacific hose got turned off. Tell me about it! 27 days with rain in Nov. Hoping the arctic express blasts through in Jan. Hoping for another chilly winter for you guys ๐๐

Looking like a significant cool down coming this weekend for us with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s for both Saturday and Sunday hell TWC has lows in the 40s showing up again for mid-week next week! Maybe a prolonged cooler period coming up for us? God, I hope so. Weather maps from TWC are showing frozen precip on Friday coming really close to the FL Panhandle in southern Alabama, highs only in the lower 40s predicted for Crestview, FL with rain on Friday, and lows in the mid 20s!

Looks like a sunny week coming up which is nice. 30s and sunny isnt bad, what I really hate are the stupid 40 degree days with cold rain and wind and 95% humidity, those days are the worst

Next week could bring the first sub 20 (-7 C) high here. Tuesday is forecast at 23 (-5 C) and Wednesday at 22 (-6 C).
Looks like an extended cold front tooโnothing over 36 (2 C) in the 10-day. Disappointing start to the season for snow so far, but hopefully we get a good amount of snow from this cold snap.

I actually saw a bit of unexpected sleet this afternoon even though the temp was in the low 40's! Too warm for any accumulation. NWS's forecast is looking better.

so NOAA rejected one of its Alaska stations as faulty because it had warmed so much that the algorithm thought it be a station error or move

850 mb temperatures. Northern Mexico is colder than southwest British Columbia [most of northern Mexico by the border away from the Gulf of Mexico is at 2000-5000 feet]. Candle must appreciate this pattern this is for late tomorrow. Impressive ridge; appears to be a fast in air mass from cold to tropical in Mexico.

this ridge giving pleasant weather for Vancouver is less pleasant for LA. now it's Southern California's turn for fire:

Or do you get decently long breaks from the stratus with just a more normal zonal flow?

Zonal flow will bring clouds/rain at least 95% of the time. A ridge like this will either bring 100% clear skies, 100% fog, or a mix between those two.
So far, it's been a mix between those two. When I lived in Eugene, Oregon a few years ago...January 2013 was extremely dense fog and below freezing almost every day. Okay, I might be inaccurate on the below freezing everyday part but that's what it seemed like. It was disgusting to say the least because there was no sun.
