Today's low was 12F (-11.1C) which looks like the coldest here since 1989, when it reached 9F (-12.8C)! The high today was 34F (1.1C) with full sun. Yesterday would have been an ice day if not for the early morning hours. Back in January 2014 we had 3 ice days. Forecast low tonight of 17F (-8.3C). Impressive! I imagine some small ponds and creeks have frozen over? I saw a bayou yesterday morning that appeared to be frozen on top. I'll try and get a better look this morning. It was down to 14F at 6 AM this morning. Looks like the actual low was 13F (10.6C) yesterday at airport. Not sure why Wunderground had been showing 12F on the daily data for AEX yesterday evening. Still the coldest since 1989. It got down to 14F in 1996.

Two consecutive lows below 15 F at your location is remarkable.

Through 17 days, the month is averaging 27.7/11.6.
Thatโs a -5.4 F departure, mostly due to the lows.
We also had our coldest high in 14 years and our warmest January day in 5 years just 6 days apart!
Snowfall is also well above average and just 2 of 17 days had a snow depth under 5โ (13 cm).

Much nicer forecast up ahead. If the warmth this weekend can melt a lil bit of snow Im sure it will go a long way towards helping us in the long run. The past couple of days we underperformed our highs a lil bit cause of the snow cover

In between hourly observations should be included, so not sure what the reason was. Wunderground revised it's data to show 13F. It got up to 43F this afternoon, but still some snow accumulation remaining in spots on ground and roofs.

It looks like the low this morning dropped down to -4 F/-20 C. I was not expecting that! Today's high topped out at 30 F/-1 C. We got about 6 in/15 cm of snow yesterday.

Oh, what do you know? It seems the Bothnia gulf is doing really well for ice cover. I would've thought there would be a 10km ice sheet along the coast or something after the clear skies. Thiugh now that I think of it, Umeรฅ only had two frigid days compared to Tavelsjรถ's 5. I mean, Ariete would probably make you believe the whole sea would be covered bu now
Que? According to the 81-10 normals the Gulf of Bothnia should be mostly be frozen by now.

another morning undercast from the summit of Mt. Washington Temperatures look flat with altitude. Summit is reading 100% humidity in the diagram, right around 8 am the fog llifted and there was undercast but before and after it went back to being in the clouds Hurricane-force winds forecast tonight and tomorrow on the summit. Supposed to warm up tomorrow, shouldn't a ridge bring placid weather? Checking the 850 hPa map, there's a low over central Quebec, the pressure difference between the low and ridge to the south is creating 60-70 mph winds over the Northeast, where the pressure gradient is highest. And then the shape of the mountain amplifies the winds, gusts should break 100 mph via www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gfs®ion=us&pkg=mslp_uv850&runtime=2018011906&fh=18www.mountwashington.org/experience-the-weather/current-summit-conditions.aspxhuh, its cooling a bit around 4000 feet from an hour or two ago while the summit and valley bottoms warmed again

Looks like we're in the center of cold right now. Wonder why? Hmm... looks like the coldest temp in the lower 48 for Jan 17th was -19 F at Monticello, KY. Kind of rare to see it in KY!

I did barely notice storm Friederike here in Marburg but apparently it was the strongest in Germany since Kyrill 2007:
203 km/h at Brocken (mountain top) and 138 km/h in Gera, Thuringia.

"Imagine only getting six minutes of sunshine in a whole month - sounds pretty depressing, doesn't it?
Well, if you live in the Russian capital you don't have to imagine it - that's exactly what happened.
Moscow had its darkest December on record in 2017, getting just six minutes of sunshine instead of the normal one hour per day."

Statistically I'm past the coldest day of the year, which is January 18 in most of Germany. The long term averages also show a significant drop in mid February before spring takes over in late February (blue graph is Germany, red Dรผsseldorf and green Munich):

Snowfall accumulation since September 30, 2017. Looks like much of the southeastern U.S. outside of Florida has at least had some accumulation.
