In the upper 40s this afternoon. Felt warm in the sun after getting accustomed to subfreezing temperatures. Clouded over a while ago.
Next 2 days are expected to be in the 50s with rain. Should melt the remaining snow.

A mild 8C today in Bunghole. With unexpected sunshine too. Looks like a much warmer week up ahead, hopefully it will melt the snowpack! Gonna be rainy on Monday and Tuesday, good opportunity to melt that stuff

I can't see why on earth you'd specifically want to the snowpack to melt. I can understanding appreciating warmer temps, but not this aspect (unless you pay golf or something and can't because of the snow cover). Frankly, melting the snowpack won't make spring/summer come any sooner. It'll be be bare, brown, dull, uninteresting, etc. I was hiking in the snow in the Poconos yesterday. Sort of depressing to think that it'll probably all be gone up there by next weekend.
The pattern really seems to be trending warmer. Not what I expected. I was thinking late January would entail another cold snap. Well, there's always february & even March for that.

Hearing birdsong for the first time since November today.
Still 4โ (10 cm) of snow on the ground despite 3 straight days of sun and low 40s.

Quite the major winter storm across the Plains, with Blizzard Warnings stretching from NE Colorado/NW Kansas up through SW Minnesota. Looks like up to 18-24" of snow for some areas.

Because snow that's been around for a while looks ugly as shit and it's not even the sort of snow that is good for making snowballs. Also a lot of the residents here are lazy af which means going anywhere you have to walk across piles of snow, which is very much annoying af

That escalated quickly! Last night it was just Winter Storm Warnings. Blizzard Warnings in Western KS but it's in the mid-60s in Southeastern KS. Places like Omaha and Des Moines are just missing out on the snow and will have a cold rain/wintry mix instead.

First tornado watch of 2018 has just been issued. Threat for some semi-discrete supercells over the next few hours, and squall line should form later.

Once you get of melting and a freeze/thaw cycle, the snow loses its beauty. And black ice is a nuisance. I'd rather it either stay fresh or go away completely. Especially since I like to bike in the winter, and messy roads, often with the shoulder narrowed makes biking harder + one of the bike paths I'd use the most isn't plowed and there's not really a safe on-road alternate. I agree bare winter landscapes get tedious after a while. This isn't bad looking (from Jan & Feb 2016) I'd prefer winters to either be in the mid or upper 20s with frequent snow or mid 40s and above with lots of sun to be decent to run or bike in.

There is still tons of snow outside in Binghamton, and that shit is fucking gross. It has a grayish-brown color, creates tons of nasty sludge puddles, and is a pain in the ass when you're walking down the street

Euro and GFS are picking up on a amplified pattern to kick off Feb... as expected, west ridge/east trough.

Luleรฅ has had a high of -23.1ยฐC at the maritime airport station. Crazy!
Nikkaluokta's high was -33.7ยฐC, Yakutsk regularly records highs less cold than that in January. So the cold pole of Sweden delivers.

Kvikkjokk and Nikkaluokta are at ca -37C now and temps should rise, so probably no -40C there. Would be the first in Scandinavia this winter. Karasjok further northeast at -34C. Folldal in the south was at -36C yesterday but has warmed dramatically and is now at -2.9C

GFS predicting some crazy warmth for February 1st and 2nd! Followed by a mammoth arctic invasion right after! That said, the arctic blast looks like it's aimed primarily at the Midwest and the Great Plains. Maybe even Pacific Northwest will join in on the fun

Since Cambium's not here, someone needs to spam this thread with maps! Noticed we had the sort of broken clouds this morning, and being a cold-front looked typical of lake-effect. Here's the cloud pattern. Hmm if it were lake effect the clouds would be streaming on the south and east sides of the lakes, but be less cloudy on the other side. Not the case www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/GOES16_CONUS.phpyou can see the rain from the cold front from yesterday now out to sea and the center of the low now to the north creating a snowstorm in Canada. www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gfs®ion=us&pkg=mslp_pcpn&runtime=2018012406&fh=6Alright so where are the clouds coming from? Map of relative humidity at 925 mb [about 1000 m or 3400 feet]. Looks like much of Canada is saturated; just winter gloom from weak sun? And a NW flow bringing the cold, saturated midlevel air. A clear sky would make the post-coldfront airmass feel much more "arctic". Of course, it isn't really, it's only 32ยฐF or so out. Windy, though. weather.us/model-charts/standard/north-america/relative-humidity-925mb.htmlchecking Mt. Washington. You can see it had a much bigger drop; Lapse rates steepen with cool, drier air. Was right around freezing on the summit yesterday while it was pouring rain; now down -1ยฐF (-18ยฐC) www.mountwashington.org/experience-the-weather/current-summit-conditions.aspxThough seriously, if this post is too image-heavy; let me know and I'll use spoilers next time.
