Denmark just set a new national all-time high for January, 12.9C in Sønderborg, beating the old record from 2005 with 0.5C.
I would have thought their national record was warmer...

If you think about it, the sun doesn't add more than a couple of degrees, there are no föhn winds and the sea isn't warmer than like 5'C

^But warmer air from S still can bring some warmth. Seems they have improved the record two times the last 13 years.

Would have thought it would be something in the 15-16 C range. Even Burwash Landing in Yukon Territory recorded 16 C in January in one of these recent years (2014?), though that was quite the freak event. Today is cooler than it's been the past few days, about 22 C with a strong breeze and a 15 C dew point outside. Rather pleasant.

Burwash Landing has high mountains to the southwest, its 15C was a fohn episode; Denmark cant get that; would have thought a southerly flow could bring mild weather but its high latitude makes that harder + European winter has less wavy variable setups to create that compared to north America

NW Germany just south of Denmark was seeing 15 C highs yesterday, so it's still really surprising the record high is only 12 C.

good morning, our warmth lately is from a non-zonal pattern unlike the last two winters. I'm guessing that's why mild + not too windy isn't happening in the mountains

Quite windy here today, wind blowing out of the east at 25 mph gusting to 37 mph, temperature of 72 F (22 C) and a dew point of 56 F (13 C). There's occasional gusts that are like something out of a tropical storm lol

GFS is predicting a powerful coldblast for early February...but the strongest part of the cold will be in Montana, the Dakotas, and Minnesota. On February 5th, a mammoth cold blast is coming for Montana and even down to Washington! Ten days away, but holy shit, that purple over Washington and Seattle looks juicy. Really hope this happens just to spite Botev

I wonder if Seattle even can get -5°C daytime highs?

I wonder if Seattle even can get -5°C daytime highs? It does, but less frequently than I thought. Hasn't since 1990; when December had 3. January 1950 had 6, must have been an interesting setup. I suspect whatever cold is forecast for Seattle won't be as extreme as the GFS predicts, no clue though. Portland, Oregon gets -5°C daytime high a bit more often than Seattle despite almost identical means; it's had 2 since 1990 and the same December 1990 had 4 days rather than 3. January 1950 had 8 there. Columbia River Gorge gives an opening for cold air from east of Cascades to seep in, while the Cascades east of Seattle are a better barrier.

For some reason it seems like its harder for Seattle to get the same sort of cold it used to. Last winter was harsh in Portland with -8F departures in January, while in Seattle the departures were only like -3F or -4F. And 2017 as a whole was very chilly in Portland, one of the coldest years this century for them, while in Seattle it was still the 4th warmest. Kinda bizarre
