Apalling week coming up for NYC, many highs in the 8-12C range with drizzle... don't think we'll drop below 0C until Xmas at least. Hopefully the pattern reverses again soon.
Meanwhile in ND, MN, and MB, coldest air of the season coming next week... will be -20s F in many areas!

-32°C 850 hPa temperatures over North Dakota. Coldest I had in recent years was -31°C in Feb 2016. These polar air blobs are so disconnected for the source of cold it's warmer in all directions.

Significant snowfall in Metro Vancouver today. Snow is just winding down now. Most areas currently have 2-15cm(1-6in) on the ground.
Looks fairly dry and chilly through Christmas so most of the snow currently on the ground will likely not melt before then.

here's what the GFS says for the actual 850 hPa temperatures rather than anomalies. A very cold airmass; -32°C over the Upper Midwest. I like that tropicaltidbits masks out areas too high in elevation to have an 850 hPa; often those numbers make little sense when they're interpolated from above. Neat way to show where the high elevation areas of the West are, too. Euro. Finally checking out that weather.us site Ryan Maue is a part of slightly different timing, same pattern. 850 hPa only reach -28°C. And here's surface temperatures over Canada and northern US. Notice the contrast east vs west of the Rockies and the tongue of cold entering Wisconsin weather.us/model-charts/eurowww.tropicaltidbits.comwatch this for airmass temperatures weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html

It was pretty heavy this morning. I picked up ~3cm in one hour from 5-6pm. Currently ~5cm on the ground, how much do you have over there?

About 3cm. It really varies by location. I just wish it was -3C today while all this snow fell. We'd be buried!

Wow, might be possible to get a week's worth of consecutive ice days for the NYC area starting from the 26th. Not sure if forecasts will moderate by then, but let's hope not!

If only the temperature drop would come sooner with this moisture...
There is a chance of snow showers on Sunday though, so we may still a white-ish Christmas depending on how widespread.
