There was distant lightning for about two hours, including some cloud to sea lightning. Towards the end of the storm, it was overhead for about 15 minutes with about 20 cloud to cloud events

Wow, missed this one. Cat 1 cyclone slamming straight into Broome. They're currently on 59mm of rain, and only a maximum gust of 100km/h in the town centre (139km/h at the port). Not too dangerous for them. Broome Latest Observations

The Cygnet Bay area got around 450mm from that system! Incredible totals from a cat 1. Meanwhile a big ass pool of heat in the centre here, although subject to change:

My parents and some friends from Hungary are going into the red centre on Jan 9. Maybe they'll get some good weather.
Just need that pink to creep further and further south, miracles have happened before...

Some chilly nights around the region, with Blenheim having 2-3C minimums.
Possible heavy rain here by about the middle of next week, with 100mm+ totals forecast.

Well above average in Sydney, looking at 27.8/19.9C, which would normally be good for January, thanks to a late burst today, Observatory Hill currently at 35.3C.

A Coral sea rain maker headed this way -a heavy rain warning from midnight thursday till 9:00 am Friday morning , with up to 160mm forecast for here. Short and sweet with rates forecast between 20-40mm an hour. 120 km/h wind for some parts as well.
Looks like the start to the summer storm season -biggest one last summer left about 850mm over three days.

Hmmm A station called the pinnacles got the rain last year in a storm system that seems to have acquired the name of The Tasman Tempest -not as much as Cyclone Bola (1989), which dropped around 920mm in a three day period. The most rain I've seen in this area from a summer storm, was the neighbouring town of Takaka(33 km MW of here), which picked up 429mm in 24 hours, about 5 years ago. And still less than Cropp River's 48 hour total of 1050 mm.

Meanwhile, the obs from today. Very, very EPIC day that I wasn't even anticipating owing to this lackluster crummer, but exceeded all and every expectation.

Penrith recorded its hottest day. Hottest day in western Sydney since 1939 (when Richmond RAAF recorded 48C).
At least it was dry heat. It was an intense desert heat. I did like that part. Now the seabreezes came in. It's a bit cooler at 30C, but the friggin' humidity is rising with DP of 17C (boo!). Ironically, I sweated at this temp.
40C+ dry heat is actually tolerable because you don't fuckin' sweat.

That's a very disturbing picture. The production rate at the Cold Front Factory is so high that they had to expand their facilities. Meanwhile, this Dickcember MTD is still 1.4C below avg, but if the forecast holds, we might creep over. Is Cold Front Factory some sort of secret Labor gubburmunt organization?
