It's amazing how Penrith is more prone to extreme heat than Cessnock and Maitland are (towns like 200km to the north in the Hunter Valley, which have similar averages but are far more inland and in a valley).

That's a very disturbing picture. The production rate at the Cold Front Factory is so high that they had to expand their facilities. Meanwhile, this Dickcember MTD is still 1.4C below avg, but if the forecast holds, we might creep over. Is Cold Front Factory some sort of secret Labor gubburmunt organization? There is a secret labor gubberment base in Antarctica which is directing cold fronts using HAARP and making sure to hit Renmark and avoid Sydney

Penrith is in a valley too though, it's elevation is only 25m. I wonder if being at the foot of the Blue Mountains makes a difference. When the westerly blows, there could be some foehn effect, not huge obviously but it could explain the 2-3C extra warmth it gets compared to, say, Bankstown.

From my knowledge, I thought it's a low-lying land that sits between mountains on its sides. Penrith, though, only has mountains to its west. The east is just flat plains. Does that constitute a valley? I would say Camden and Campbelltown, in southwest, are situated in a valley, because there's Blue Mountains to their west and the Southern Highlands to their east. But I don't know...

Poor old Coasters -The Buller and Grey districts had a drought declared two days ago, then Greymouth picked up 79mm in two hours, the following day. Had a few flooded shops etc.
The rain is heading this way, with a warning for up to 100mm overnight. Got 23mm the night before last -I was in an alcohol induced slumber, so didn't know it had rained until I checked the rain gauge

Unfortunately I wasn't in Auckland for the storm on the 2nd-4th so I havent seen any good rain for months. Although, it did reach 30C here today so that was exciting

There is talk of severe thunderstorms for tomorrow. Top end of the North Island has been getting my dream summer weather lately.

I remember a hot spell in Invercargill in the mid 1990s and people certainly made the most of it -Invercargill has a great drive on beach, and there would have been over a thousand cars on one day. The hotspell coincided with epic swell and offshore winds, and still rates as one of my most memorable week of surf.
