What a difference three weeks makes! April 12th vs today... looks like here a few weeks ago. How much more before leaf out? Not very long. We've got mostly above average temperatures in the forecast and no more subfreezing nights after tonight, so I expect they'll be out shortly. Most years we've got leaves and flowers by mid-May and I think this year will be no exception despite the very delayed start to spring. The grass has already started to turn green quite quickly over the last few days, so that's a good sign.

The grass turned green about a week ago here. I saw the first leaves on bushes yesterday, getting lots of buds now due to the summer temperatures. Today was 29/16C with a dewpoint of 17 and a thunderstorm, summer weather and the plants are showing it. May 1st: Buds are breaking open on this tree. Flowers! May 2nd: Should be leaves soon.

That's what I call a "thunderstorm waiting to happen" sky.

That's what I call a "thunderstorm waiting to happen" sky. Thunderstorms look like they are building to the north and west. Might not get much here until early tomorrow morning.

A blue dome sky and greenery is really picking up the pace. I love the dry and clean look this time of year. 12°C.

Today evening circa at 5 pm, about 13-14c. Trees are half bare here. Broad leaf trees less advanced as always. These maples on the last picture were the best looking ones. Not as horrible as 2017 (well, that 2017 has been the worst one during my lifetime) but I have seen some better years and this is no wonder as we have had no warm spells here. Today it was mostly cloudy and cool, sun came out here about 4 pm.

Green, green everywhere! It literally exploded during the hot-wave during the last week of April Here it is Turin a couple of days ago: ^ Looking at the traffic signs in this picture a funny comment on street names comes to mind. Many cities in Italy name their streets after other countries. So in Turin there are a "corso Francia" (France Avenue), a "corso Stati Uniti" (United States Avenue) and... "corso Unione Sovietica" (Soviet Union Avenue), which is the street in the picture. The economy department of my university is along that road, so their address is "Soviet Union Avenue 218bis". It was proposed several times to change that name into something else, but the procedure would be too complicated and so the name has remained. While this is my place this morning:

Vegetation update from today: It's a tad hazy. Montsouris's humidex reached 90°F for the first time today, with a dew point of 15°C. How will I sleep? Can you spot the plane landing at Orly airport? The canopy looks more or less complete by now. One can barely see the tower blocks on the horizon with the haze. They're only 16 km away as the crow flies. This château one can see with ease. It's only 3 km away. One can even see the Eiffel tower! It's been 0/8 cloud octas for 3 days straight now, which is noticeable for here. Usually fair weather is accompanied with at least a few altitude clouds. Great weather to lounge in the shade... ...or in the sun. Or to play in the water... ...or even to go fishing.

We had our first day of 20'C temps today. High was 20.7'C. Soooo many people in the most central park. Queue for icecream. Leaves on this weird linden tree. Leaves on this birch tree. It looks like it's right next to the wall but its twigs are about 1.5-3m from the wall. Though the ground tiles around are kept above freezing during the winter so it's not a "normal" tree. Usually turn green about a day or two before the others do. Red leaves. Green leaves. Leaves. Large trees have leaves now too, albeit quite tiny. Springy! Still a lot of people by the river at 8 o'clock (like 20 people in a 30m stretch). A bunch of dandelions have started appearing on lawns now which is very nice. Tomorrow's supposed to be 19'C and the rest of the week sunny and 12-16'C. More leaves should be popping out more rapidly now.

Some completely normal planted birches have got leaves now, and considering Umeå is the official city of birches, the whole city will be properly green in a few days. Man is this a beautiful sight after a long and hard winter. Alders are starting to get leaves now too. Elms too
