Stories, predictions, hot takes for the 2024 season?
Before i do my ladder prediction later today:
I'm concerned about Port Adelaide, i'll think they'll be okay in the long run but idk about their defence. BZT and Ratagoulea aren't lifesavers, Soldo is a serviceable ruckman. I'm not saying they'll be terrible but I reckon they'll be 6th-8th and not as impressive as last year. Can see Hinkley getting the sack for Josh Carr at the end of the season and they'll push up in 2025-27.
not bad, but yea they did better than I thought lol
Sydney - top 3, extremely strong list. Great coach. Grand Final 2022 which everyone forgot about. They'll be premiership contenders for sure.
bang on
Carlton - will drop. Their stoppage game will be found out and exploited. They are still not a 4 quarter team, wildly inconsistent and had 3 games last year decided by extremely "unlikely to happen again" pivotal umpiring decisions. They'll finish 6th-10th.
correct!

Carlton are the dark horse imo.... 2 best forwards in the competition... Back to back flags are a pretty tough ask but Collingwood will be up there... I think Brisbane might slide a bit and Sydney too. GWS another dark horse and Port Adelaide ? I agree with the assessment of yours.... the Crows to make the Eight... I think Geelong are done and dusted but might make up the 8th spot. Need one more team for the Eight ? .... dunno, no side stands out.... Essendon as a smokie ?

My various predictions and musings about 2024:
- Carlton will finish in like 5th or 6th place I reckon. A dangerous side when they're on. Also what greys said RE 2 best forwards... Lol McKay is shit. Curnow I'll give you though, he is a gun even though he stages for frees. - I genuinely have no idea about Port, I'll have to see their pre-season match and maybe rounds 1/2 to get some sort of an idea. - GWS' list is really solid and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they finish top 4. - Sydney is getting a lot of hype, I don't see it personally however they will be somewhere around the 8. They do have a lot of quality young players. - Melbourne looked good tonight, the pre-season win will do a lot for them considering their off field drama. - Gold Coast have been talked about in terms of making the 8, I still reckon they're a year away from this. 2025 will be the year it'll happen. - Collingwood looked OK in their pre-season match, I'll need to see the first couple of rounds as well to gauge them. - Brisbane will probably make the top 4 again. They will want to go one better than last year (and I hope we stop them again haha) - Adelaide will make the 8 this year. They were very unlucky to miss out last year. - Saints will also make the 8 again, they did it last year with a more raw list.
Haven't really thought about the other teams, they probably aren't in contention quite yet. I hope North Melbourne finish a few places higher, and I hope Hawthorn finish in the bottom four for another couple of years.

Round 1 vibe check
Adelaide: not great signs but let's see how they perform at home
Brisbane: ball control and movement has slowed a lot, unsure performance, defence was poor.
Carlton: only one genuinely dominant quarter in 2 games, they've looked OK otherwise and scraped away against an injured Richmond team...alongside some VERY lucky calls late in the game from the umpires. Seems like the same old carlton from '22, '23.
Collingwood: wtf is going on. Game plan has slowed, they look a LOT less confident.
Essendon: one of the worst first 3 quarters ive seen, got absolutely destroyed by hawthorn in EVERY facet and were ahead at 3QTR time purely on a few individual performances and some extremely unusual luck with accuracy. Their 4th quarter was good though. But still, MASSIVE danger sides. They have not improved or learnt any of their problems/issues and will pay dearly against better teams.
Fremantle: flagmantle...but they looked good, poor start then a great turnaround, controlled the game, Serong with 46 was IMMENSE, was everywhere. Alex Pearce back to his best.
Geelong: solid performance, innacurate but good game. Dempsey is good fun to watch.
GWS: sex
Gold Coast: slowly looking good but still shaky, will give them a few weeks before I start praising them as they like to start seasons well and then fade away
Hawthorn: looked great, very good game-plan emerging, ran out of legs in the 4th.
Melbourne: good turnaround, poor against Sydney in R0 but good against the dogs.
Norf: impressive, Norfball to start. 2025-2028 premiers confirmed.
Port Adelaide: as you'd expect, good result. New recruits all looking serviceable to great.
Richmond: first two games have been, eh. They need to commit to the rebuild.
Sydney: excellent start, dominating other good teams around them. Already an early shout for premiers/grand final appearance at least.
St Kilda: peak Rossball, inaccurate, great rebound. Sorely missing Sinclair. Max King played a poor game but the Saints did their best to blanket Geelong's elite forwardline and keep the game low scoring, scrappy and competitive when they didn't really turn up.
Western Bulldogs: very disappointing, not good. Could be another very up and down, inconsistent and underperforming season.
West Coast: Harley Reid has been featured on 56 Front and Back pages of The West combined.

This is a really strange image when you think about it. Right next to each other on the ladder after round 6 are a grand finalist, a middle team from last year and the wooden spooners.

One of the most thrilling ANZAC day games of all time. Mark of the year, strong performances from both sides' respective key forwards and a fucking draw

I dont like football anymore what a waste of a season. Not high scoring enough to win, wayy too good of a defence to conceed and get smashed. Just a parade of 5 to 25 point losses but as soon as the saints get more than 15 points behind it looks impossible to overturn the result.
