Polar vortex? So now we're calling any sort of below freezing air that? Jesus... I thought it was a joke tweet, trying to make Vancouver's not very cold cold snap sound even more unimpressive.

^ That's been the case since 2014, since that epic cold snap in January 2014 happened. People act like the "Polar Vortex" is something completely new and now call any little cold snap a "polar vortex".... So . At least it was actually snowing where I am unlike in that video with one flake here and there. Although, it has died down a bit already. Not much moisture to work with and it's coming from a subpar direction. Moisture coming from the east?

Yeah it seems like Winnipeg and Grand Forks are getting the double whammy with back-to-back cold weather outbreaks. The first one was focused mostly on the Midwest and East, this one more towards the West I guess. Those places are in the sweet spot where they get affected by both. Bastards

Not much moisture to work with and it's coming from a subpar direction. Moisture coming from the east? It's coming from the southwest, which can be good but only with a potent system. NW is better in most cases. Ah well...the models are looking good for the next +10 days so I'd be surprised if we don't get a decent snowfall out of this cold air.

Just yesterday morning it was 4 (-16 C), now just 36 hours later, itโs 53 (12 C) and sunny. Loving this variability.
Thankfully, today is warm AND dry. Tomorrow could hit 60 (16 C), then by the weekend itโs back to the low 20s. Excellent start to the month.

Arctic front passing over the Vancouver area today. Temps were around 3-4C earlier this morning; now down to -2C in western sections and -8C in eastern sections.
West parts of Metro Vancouver didn't pick up much snow today, perhaps tr-1cm. The eastern suburbs picked up around 2-4cm, while the Fraser Valley received about 5-8cm.
Going to get mighty cold with the passage of the front tonight. Temps are already running colder than modeled. Forecast windchills are around -15C for Vancouver and below -20C east into the Fraser Valley.
This week is looking pretty chilly with highs around freezing and lows around -7C(19F). A few systems are forecast to ride down the coast....however with the suppressed jet they will bypass SW BC and most likely hit the Seattle to Portland corridor. Each low will bring in fresh waves of arctic air from the interior so Vancouver looks to remain cold but dry for the next two weeks. Hope the models change for the better and begin showing some snow up here.

I probably mentioned most of these already, but this is the NWS top weather events for Wisconsin in 2018. Two snow storms, 5 flooding events, 1 tornado outbreak, and a record wet year with some months way warmer or colder than normal. www.weather.gov/media/mkx/WCM/2018wisconsinevents.pdfThe April snowstorm is the most impressive to me.
The summer rainfall was impressive too, but the flooding it caused was not.
14 day rain totals, some spots over 20"/508mm i.imgur.com/Kn8Lh64.jpg30 day rain total has a wider 20" range and a lot over 15" i.imgur.com/vQ2ctAq.jpg

Widespread 3-4 inches of rain this week. And perhaps a thunderstorm?

Seattle got pummeled today.... hearing reports of a widespread 10-25cm. Temps well below freezing during the day.
Meanwhile....cold, dry and windy to the north in Vancouver. About 2cm of snow on the ground.

Reached 63 (17 C) today, making it 4 straight Februarys reaching 60f.
It was mostly sunny too, usually itโs raining when itโs warm in the winter but luckily today and yesterday were both completely dry. Great for being outside!

prediction on the snow in California from a blog post last Tuesday AJ1013An interesting side-effect of the extreme Arctic outbreak over interior continental North America: a much less dramatic but still regionally striking lobe of continental polar air is now expected to settle southward over the Pacific Northwest early next weekโbringing sub-freezing temperatures and probably some sea-level snow to Washington and Oregon. Recent model forecasts (including from both the GFS and ECMWF) are suggesting at least some potential for this very cold air to edge southward into far northern California by Monday/Tuesday. In fact, both models are currently suggesting the potential for accumulating snowfall well below 2000 feet elevation along the North Coast and across the northern Sacramento Valley. (Right now, these models are suggesting the potential for snow not only in Redding, but even near sea level along the coast near in Eureka/Arcata). weatherwest.com/archives/6626
