Seattle got pummeled today.... hearing reports of a widespread 10-25cm. Temps well below freezing during the day. Meanwhile....cold, dry and windy to the north in Vancouver. About 2cm of snow on the ground. Vancouver is a cold fucken desert (e.g. Astana, Harbin) and Seattle is a snowy polar paradise (e.g. Grytviken, TromsΓΈ).

Yesterday Seattle recorded a 32F high at 12:59AM, the only freezing high in nearly five years.
1.0" of snow was recorded on 2/3 and 1.7" on 2/4 at SeaTac.

The models look horrible for us over the next 10 days. Seattle stealing everything. 12z euro gives them 2ft of snow while we turn into the Edmonton of the PNW. Cold, windy and dry.

High hit 72 F (22 C) today, had a low of -2 F (-19 C) just five morning ago, good variability! Would prefer colder temps with the same variability, but it's ok. Tomorrow will be much cooler with a high of 46 F (8 C) and rain.

Nice^
We went from a 17/0 day on the 1st to 63/45 yesterday so nice variability here too.
Tomorrow will be back in the 50s then colder with ice on Friday.
Yesterday was a new daily record high, which means now 8/29 February daily record highs were in the last 4 years!

Have we ever failed so miserably with relatively sustained cold like we are in the midst of now, as far as snow goes? I will be amazed and surprised if we don't get at least 6-10" out of this. But seeing how this winter has been... maybe not so surprising.

-26.7'C last night, which is likely to be the coldest of the year since a milder period is coming up and after that the sea ice is gonna break up and so even if there's another cold wave in late February, I doubt it's going to be as cold as this mid-jan to early feb cold wave.

Saskatoon hit a low of -39.3C this morning! That's by far our coldest temperature of the winter and our coldest temperature since January 4th, 2009 when we hit a low of -41.4C! Since then we've had several winters that hit -37 or -38, but this was our first -39 in over a decade At the present moment it's -38.2C with a windchill of -50! Been a while since I've experienced one of those!

And the temperature just dropped to -41C! Our first time crossing the -40 mark since the aforementioned January 4th, 2009 reading! Fucking epic winter!!!!!!

Would take a couple minutes to chill the case of beer I assume What does that actually feel like, and when I say that, I mean in a shirt, not an eskimo coat...

The drop continues! -42.5C with a windchill of -53! I believe this is now the coldest temperature since January 2004! Did NOT expect to see this, nature's sure making up for the lack of cold snaps this winter! This has been an exciting few seasons, our hottest temperature in just under a decade in August and now our coldest temperature in over a decade today. Not bad at all

^ Sweet!! Have you spent much time outside at all today? How much is it gonna warm up today? Mild and shitty here at least cooler than yesterday though I guess... I was outside for maybe 10 minutes when I left the apartment to go to work this morning. Took some pics which I'll upload later today, and my phone-using hand went numb in about 30 seconds. Strangely enough my face felt fine. Being in denser, inner-city area with lots of buildings and trees around helps block the wind, so it actually didn't feel nearly as cold as I was expecting, considering the windchill was below -50C. The presence or lack of wind really makes a huge difference at cold temperatures. Forecast high for today is -25C but looking at the hourly forecast we're 12C colder than what we're supposed to be at, so I'd say there's a fair chance we might actually stay below -30C all day. We'll see what happens!

What does that actually feel like, and when I say that, I mean in a shirt, not an eskimo coat... Haven't tried it in a regular shirt yet, but I can tell you that exposed skin will feel like it's being stabbed by daggers of ice and goes numb within a minute or so and you can feel your nose hairs crystallizing when you breath in due to the moisture condensing and freezing. Snow also crunches under your feet (sounds almost like styrofoam or something) and everything from your breath to car exhaust to building ventilation leaves large, long-lasting clouds of steam. Pretty epic winter atmosphere

Morningrise Is there any ice fog? I woke up to a layer of ice 0.1-0.2" (3-5mm) thick. It was not completely smooth so there was probably some slush or sleet mixed in. Tonight has another 0.1-0.2" of ice in the forecast, and then rain on Thursday. The past few days have been a huge turnaround from last week's cold snap.

Morningrise Seems like it's turning out to be a stupendous winter season for the praries. Exactly a week ago Winnipeg airport (YWG) also recorded its coldest temp since 2007, -39.9 C.

We'll see what happens! That's the main problem with midwestern USA and the Canadian Prairies. The winter averages don't look that bad, especially when you account for the much stronger sun compared to here. Medicine hat and Lethbridge look like pretty decent climates - on paper - but what you don't see is how windy it is there, and unlike here where there's never any wind when it's below -15 or -20'C, there can be windspeeds beating our normal annual max, even when it's -30'C.

Talking about cold, our airport had a low of -18.5C the night before yesterday (-12.7C in the city at 127 m asl), which is almost exactly the typical coldest low during a year (after 2000). But, like Baba said, it is always calm air here when we have those very coldest lows.
