Beautiful snowy morning in Lake placid, N.Y. snowed about 1.5" last night, makes for some nice powder today. At least all my skiing will be in by the time that rainstorm moves in

Got some nice unexpected snow last night. Probably 1-2β. Very pretty on the ground and on the trees.

Periods of rain today with temps mostly in the upper 40's.
Supposed to warm up overnight with a warm front. Could get near 70F tomorrow morning before a cold front arrives which should bring temps down to around 60F in the afternoon. More rain coming and possibly t-storms overnight. Some severe potential to the east.

There was a freak rainstorm last week with over 120 mm recorded at DMK from 28-29: Nearly 100 mm was recorded in a six hour period: Rainfall was lower elsewhere with the city proper receiving 40 - 60 mm on the 29th. Still impressive given that the average rainfall in December is only 6 mm.

Wow, just saw where it's 71F in Lafayette about 80 miles south of Alexandria. 51F here. Probably not much longer before it starts to warm up...

When I went to bed last night it was 52F. Woke up to 72F this morning; 20F warmer overnight! Quite muggy outside; carport is soaking wet. Dewpoint of 68F. Strong wind gusts from the south. Looks like a line of heavy rain coming and should turn a bit cooler later this morning.

A warm front passed through overnight, reaching 55 (13 C) early this morning.
Much colder now, already down to 35 (2 C).
The front came with very high winds, with gusts up to 61 mph!
Sustained winds reached 44 mph and were well over 30 for several hours.
Nice way to bring in the new year with some interesting weather.

Forecast for DC while I'm there just keeps getting lamer and lamer, not a single low below 34 F (1 C) forecast I may as well have traveled to Tallahassee. I'm gonna try and hit the mountains of WV/MD/PA to get some decent chilly weather.

^No worries man, I bet the same gayshit will happen when I visit Yellowknife. But even if it's 15 F above avg (for instance), the nice thing about the places we're visiting is that they'd still be far better than what we normally deal with during winter. Btw, you probably already know about this but if you pick certain very specific dates (even as soon as Jan 4-13), there are flights from MIA to MSP for under $100. Those flights aren't at horrible times either. Fuckin ridiculous because the cheapest ones from EWR or LGA to MSP are like $200.

Wow, you're going to Yellowknife?! Nice! When are you heading out there? And true, I'm at least thankful that it's not torch weather (above 60 F) and rather it's seasonably mild weather. Still kinda lame though especially because as recent as Friday they were predicted highs mostly in the upper 30s and low 40s, now it's upper 40s and low 50s And wow, I didn't know that, that's pretty fucking awesome. I'm more of a road trip guy myself but it'd be hard to turn down a flight to MSP for less than $100. Pretty sweet.

Same here. The absence of wind and feeble winter sun do wonders, today's high was 0.2Β°C after yesterday's 1.3Β°C. Frost is building up on north-facing roofs. We're under 570 dam heights and the 850 mb temps are nearing 10Β°C: That's a very strong inversion, 850 mb sound very warm there for winter. High pressure and vertical mixing should even that out? You meant low pressure? The pressure has risen but because of the positioning of the high, the surface flow went from variable and weak to moderate and westerly-dominated. Temps have risen to nearly 10Β°C yesterday!

Planning stuff out right now, hoping it trends colder but the opposite could very well happen. I like road trips too. A couple years back I flew into MSP, rented a car, and drove up to Int'l Falls (and back) during an Arctic blast. It was a good trip but the rental definitely added some unwanted costs/risks. www.city-data.com/forum/46767464-post185.html

Ugh this last month has SUCKED. When will it end? Im not ready to throw in the towel for winter, but it's ridiculous. There wasn't even much snow in Lake placid over new years, just got back after being there a week skiing.
33F and icy mist right now at home

Epic storm in Finland last night. Record 10-minute sustained wind was 32.5 m/s, 0.5 m/s from being categorised as hurricane force (Beaufort 12). On land the strongest gust was recorded in Vaasa, with 32.8 m/s.
The storm gave so much fuel to wind power plants that real-time electricity prices dropped by 90% for the rest of the night.
The strongest-ever winds were recorded on the BogskΓ€r islets in the western part of the Northern Baltic on Tuesday night. The average wind speed over a 10-minute period was 32.5 m/s while gust speeds reached as much as 41.6 m/s. A new wave height record of 7.9 meters was set in the Southern Sea of Bothnia, says the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
As many as 60,000 households were without power around Finland on Wednesday, mostly in southern and central parts of the country. The Pirkanmaa region around Tampere has been particularly hard hit, with up to 30,000 households losing electricity.
As of mid-afternoon the national total was down to some 40,000 households.
Trees have fallen on rail tracks and damaged electric lines between Laihia and Vaasa in western Finland. As a result, trains to SeinΓ€joki are being replaced by buses. Similarly, trains have been replaced by busses between Joutseno and Muukko in southern Karelia where lines have been damaged by fallen trees. On Wednesday, most long-distance trains were experiencing delays of between 20 and 85 minutes.
Meanwhile, ferries between Finland and Sweden were unable to call at the port of Mariehamn in the Γ
land Islands on Tuesday night, and are unlikely to do so through Wednesday.
41.6 m/s is 150 km/h or 93 mph.
