^^ Looks like a real winter wonderland! Spring wonderland here instead; pics from Saturday too. The weather was showery; got a tiny bit of snow the day after. Comunity gardens Mural displaying the inhabitants of a building. Would be strange for me to have my mug painted on the facade of my building. Fortunately it's all bricks so hard to do. Electric scooter salmoning a cycle lane. How stereotypical can a photo get? Saw one of these for sale for 2 millions a few years ago. God know how much it costs now. Rediculous.

Next day went up Mt. Colden. Took a slightly longer loop through Avalanche Pass / Lake, which was well worth it. Mt. Colden on the way out just before sunset more through Avalanche Pass on Avalanche lake, all frozen, easier going then the trail Colden Lake trail signs are lower than usual trail climbed steeply up (1900' in 1.6 miles, 1300 feet in the last mile) starting to get a view; Algonquin where I was 3 weeks ago up! near treeline a bit on the edge here summit up ahead light wind, upper teens, pleasant to stand around in the sun. best hiking day of the winter. Marcy, highest peak in NY State lower mountains to the northeast back in the trees, different kind than the Whites at that elevation; seem taller Speagles84 mentioned the difference

Underappreciated? Actually when I was in Lake Placid 3 weeks ago I got the opposite feeling. Despite it being -16C and windy, the downtown area was so freaking crowded (with impossible-to-find parking) that I actually wished it was less well known. Hotels are also pretty hard to get on short notice. In recent years the influx of winter tourists has increased so much that new security precautions will need to be put in place for skiers at Whiteface: www.northcountrypublicradio.org/news/story/40601/20200213/ski-and-snowboard-theft-on-the-rise-at-whiteface

never got around to posting my last two of three days in the Whites. Second day, up Mt. Madison (5300 feet), with a low trailhead, elevation gain was 4000 feet. A slog, but the trail wasn't super steep except in a few short section; consistent grade and well-packed. Mt. Washington had very strong winds, and the only trailhead that's doable without mountaineering gear was another 40 minutes drive each way from where I was staying + I had never done Mt. Madison in the winter (only presidential peak I hadn't). So Madison it is. A low that had just missed us but deposited a few inches of snow overnight was close enough to lead to lingering cloud higher up most of the day + strong winds. Could hear the wind roaring above as I hiked, but it was slowly weakening as I ascended. Best photo of the rather viewless hike getting near where it starts to open up. Definitely not one of my favorite trails, as there's little views or much interesting until 3000 feet of elevation gain donned a balaclava for part of the final above treeline summit climb; but it was in the mid-teens. Even with the strong wind, windchill wasn't that high and heated up ascending trapping all the heat in my face, took it off soon. Put it back on descending, as the wind was in my face me with balaclava, photo emphasizes my eye color summit was 14°F; dunno how much wind speed change with altitude; Mt. Washington was 50 mph, Madison is a 1000 feet lower; some people managed Mt. Adams, 500 feet higher than Madison frozen lake wall of cloud looking back at the summit me with no balaclava light back at the trailhead, maybe 40 minutes before sunset

next morning the Presidentials were covered with cloud again but they were rapidly clearing. with the Mount Washington Hotel in the foreground. Hotel is in Bretton Woods; which isn't really a town. Just the hotel, cog and some tourist facilities. And the Irving gas station. heading up to Mt. Pierce and Eisenhower

This album was taken last winter, I uploaded it to CD but Voloschlong zapped it, along with my account. So I'll repost it here. I started in the town and walked to some medieval ruins on top of a mountain. It's a good illustration of the altitude affecting marginal winter conditions. Voloschlong was right to zap it. Those are obviously not your photos and definitely not from Wales.

It was brutal, I fought alongside many a great soldier, you were among them, and what acknowledgement have we received? None!!!!!

This week I did my annual winter trip (Yellowknife again this year). According to Env Canada and WU it was the coldest week in over 10 years, and I got to experience -40C several times! It was -43C there while it was +20C in NYC (I cannot emphasize just how immensely satisfying that felt). Two videos and a lot of pics below. The videos derp out a bit: that's not something I can fix (my computer just has a hard time handling files that large).
14 pictures below. If anyone is interested I can make a separate thread with more details about the trip and these temps etc, but here there seems to be a general lack of deep interest in extreme cold, so this will probably suffice. Edit: Here's a less choppy version of both videos, combined into one (and a little bit more). Awesome pictures.
