A tale of two winters visualised. A lot of snow in the north, nothing in the south.

Yesterday ended up with 5.0β (12 cm) of snow, the biggest daily fall since November.
It warmed steadily throughout the day though and reached 39 (4 c) just before midnight after a low of 12 (-11 c).
Still only 2/18 days this month have been below average and thereβs a +8.3 f anomaly.

TromsΓΈ had 70 cm of lying snow as far back in the winter as 6 November, their snowiest start to the season for nearly 100 years, but that's more than they've had at any point since!
Currently 54 cm on the ground there as of yesterday with rain forecast for today.

Yesterday only got to 18 (-8 c), the coldest high of the season and the first ice day in 4 weeks, that has to be close to a record. It dropped down to 10 (-12 c) last night, the coldest temp since December 19th and the 2nd coldest temp of the season. It looks like a few inches of snow has fallen so far and NWS says another 2-4β today. First actual decent snowfall since mid November. 5.1C/0.7C the averages so far in January. Rediculous. Looks like January 2020 will be one of the warmest in not just the Northeast but the Nordics as well
For my location, up to January 19th I'm averaging 41.6F/24.5F mean 33.0F (5.3C/-4.1C, mean 0.5C) which is the 4th warmest on record. Only 4 Januaries have recorded means of above 32F.
EDIT: 3 out of 4 have happened since 1998 , the super ElNino of the 90s.

Sitting at 53.3 mm for the event (17th-20th of January), and 69.7 mm in total for January.
About average for this time of year...finally!

Sunny and cold today, only reached 21 (-6 c) after a low of 5 (-15 c) which is the coldest temp this winter.
Through 19 days, January is averaging 40.2/25.7, which would be 10th warmest except the last week will bring it down.

At around 5:40 this morning Turku recorded a new January record high with 9.2C. Kronoby hit the same, but already at midnight. For them it was not a record, but the one recorded in 1971 (9.5C) held out.

Date of arrival of winter (mean permanently below 0C).
Actually winter has been reversed from December in some parts:
The map hasn't been updated for a while, but it seems that meteorological winter didn't start in December in Turdku and other places in the south. S U B T R O P I Q U E

After the absolute heat record last year, Paris-Montsouris broke its all-time high pressure record yesterday, at 1047.8 hPa (records began in 1873).
New national record in Abbeville too with 1049.7 hPa, and pressures north or 1050 hPa in England!
Lower temps with the high pressure with the 4th freeze of 2020 rn. Holy fuck only 3 more freezes and we'll reach December's positively arctic tally.
