This winter has been so fucking pathetic. No real cold snaps, no real snowfalls, we haven't even had a fucking ice day yet. I'm seriously considering going out to Alaska for a week to get my fill of cold and snow. Last Friday until yesterday had some pretty decent cold and crisp weather, and even with that, January is still averaging 6.0 F (3.3 C) above average. The forecast looks consistently seasonal, so at least nothing stupidly warm on the horizon.

I see flights to Anchorage start off at about $450, which isn't bad, but I have to take into consideration car rental, lodging and on top of that how much PTO I have. If I get my tax refund early this year, I would love to go.

The Alaskan train us very scenic and goes to Denali Fairbanks Kenai peninsula etc and could avoid a big chunk of change renting a car. There aren't that many roads in Alaska anyways so could be considered

April can be snowy but the default is sunshine and highs in the low 30s to mid 40s, which is definitely nice but not that wintry.

Go to Maine or Colorado or something for your snow fix then find a way to get a few weeks off and go to Alaska in summer. Winter has been boring here too. The first 2 weeks of November had our only decent snowstorm and it hasnโt gotten much colder since. Last week of December had some interesting warmth and there was a super warm day 2 Saturdays ago but otherwise this winters been a lot of 30s and light snow.

Got up to 47 (8 c) today. Was sunny for awhile, turned to light rain now.
Forecast for next week got significantly downgraded from upper 30s to upper 20s for highs. Oh well, better now than in February or March.

Speagles84 huh, interesting. For some reason traveling by train up there never crossed my mind lol. Does train travel go far up north into Alaska, like further north than Fairbanks? I'm not sure where I'd go to be honest, although obviously Anchorage, Denali Park, and Fairbanks are three obvious ones. ๐๐ฟMรถrรถn๐๐ฟ I wasn't too sure yet, just an idea I have in my mind, not something written in concrete just yet. Though I'd like to go in early-mid February while they're still in a cold pattern. Yeah, the weather in April from what I've seen looking in Fairbanks' history seems kinda boring lol, though the Arctic coast/North Slope is still quite cold in April. Steelernation true, but I wanted to have the full Alaskan experience with bitter cold, short daylight, ice fog, etc. I kinda want to take advantage of the fact they're finally having a colder than usual winter, though you're right going for only a week is a shame. Just kind of an interesting trip I have in mind right now, not something for sure just yet. Mild, rainy morning here. 46 F with moderate rain, easterly breeze at 17 mph causing a wind chill of 39 F (3.9 C). Gross weather.

I don't think the train goes north of Fairbanks but I think you can't really go north of Fairbanks by car either. There is one road north and at some point it goes private for trucking only

alex992 the Dalton highway goes all the way up to Prudhoe Bay by the Arctic Ocean. Probably impassible in winter though.

This January has been comparable to those of Southeastern Virginia:
January (so far) at my PWS: 46.5 / 30.3 (38.4) - 2.40โ precip // 2.5โ snow
Average January in Williamsburg, VA: 47.4 / 29.6 (38.5) - 3.70โ precip // 1.8โ snow
My PWS (Celsius) 8.0 / -0.9 (3.6) - 61.1mm precip // 6.4cm snow
Williamsburg (Celsius) 8.6 / -1.3 (3.6) - 94.0mm precip // 4.6cm snow

alex992 the Dalton highway goes all the way up to Prudhoe Bay by the Arctic Ocean. Probably impassible in winter though. I think it would be fine (road condition-wise) as it's not that snowy of a place, just cold and remote. Probably not advisable if you're alone and inexperienced in such situations though, as I'm guessing Alex is/would be. I drove the Dalton to Prudhoe Bay in early September with 2 other guys. Would not want to do it alone in winter. And no, it doesn't get closed off at any point just for semis. But...it is goddamn gorgeous there anytime of year. Fuck...

Air quality has improved a lot. Noticeably breezy last night, I think that may be helping. The last week has been quite hot, more similar to April. We got within 1 C of the record Jan high:

Speagles84 Steelernation yeah, I've read about the Dalton Highway, it looks fucking beautiful on street view. Don't know if I have the balls to drive that in winter though, I was thinking about driving to Manley Hot Springs or out to Circle. ๐๐ฟMรถrรถn๐๐ฟ yeah I would be quite inexperienced. I've also read that ground blizzards are quite a big hazard there in winter/spring, so it's not just about snow falling but more about very strong winds up there and brutally low wind chills. Sounds fun but I have to plan this shit out better. 38 F with a 31 F dew point here as of 9 am, low this morning was 29 F (-1.7 C) and the high today is predicted at 45 F (7.2 C). It'll likely get way higher than the predicted high though.

5.3/-1.0ยฐC (42/30ยฐF) averages over the past 7 days. The way things are shaping up this might well be the wintriest week of winter 2019/2020.
