What is arietes motive for this? Is he afraid Finnish police will stumble upon the horribly non pc stuff and arrest him?
My motive is that it has reaped no benefits so far. Not a single member has stumbled upon this forum, registered and become active. There's no point in having people being able to lurk and view the shoutbox for example.
So if thats the issue why are you pursuing closing the entire forum instead of just the shoutbox which i have stated before id like private as well

I voted for making it private again. There's been zero benefits to having it open, not many negatives either but I don't really get the point after it being open for half a year and nothing really happens. There's been zero increase in activity (in general), there's been an increase in activity recently due to everyone quarantining and being bored. The grand majority of the new members since it's been open haven't contributed, and the ones that have are here by invitation. As Ariete said, no benefit of people being able to lurk here with no repercussions, although this forum isn't well known like that so I'm not sure how many people really "lurk". Either way, it's pointless to have it open.

I don't get it, we close we lose the potential for more positives. We stay open there remains the potential for more members, not too mention credibility as a forum, the Aussies all elf because they felt this place shady since we were private. We look better as an open place, more inviting.

All the "potentials" are just speculation. Being more inviting can backlash too, as idiots also find us more inviting. I think we should have a careful vetting process of who becomes a new member or not, and not just let any fuck stick in in the name of "activity". I'm all about quality over quantity. Either way, I don't give a shit. It's not gonna break my heart to leave it open, but I just don't see the point of doing so.

B87 lurked here before requesting to rejoin; maybe the open forum made it more likely he's here?

No. He said in the shoutbox that he hadn't even realised the forum is open before he registered again.

So, we have been public for 5 months, and the result is: zero new members.
I was against a public forum in the first place, and I think we should return to that. There seems to be no benefit with the public forum but only downsides: weirdos like can stalk freely.
So close the forum, or at the very least make the shoutbox hidden.
Yup, been saying this for months. Experiment has failed to produce any of the intended results. Logical course of action would be to revert back to how it was since we gain nothing by it being public. "But I want people who aren't members to look at my posts!" - Ängler Whöler

Were they from the Aus weather forum, or were they all AA's farmer mates?

Upon further consideration, I have changed my opinion to favour a return to privacy.

I didn't necessarily want them gone, it was just strange because there was no vote - they kind of just appeared one day. And there were literally like 150 of them. But they only posted in their section of the forum, never conversed with any of the non-aussie people on here which made it awkward for the rest of us.

I voted to keep it open, I don't have any problem about making what I write accessible to everyone.
I also have a small fear that setting the forum fully secret again would just make some users feel freer to write the most questionable stuff all over the forum, while the rest in practice would not change much.

That Knot guy was at least pretty much AW v 2.0. My first impression was that most of the Aussie members were quite bogan.

Our forum was secret from its inauguration to November last year. Have you seen a difference in behaviour? I haven't. And I mean, I could still post some questionable stuff, like pouring a kilo of ketchup on carbonara though we are public.

I was absent for a year, and I can't say I've noticed any difference in the general tone when I returned.

Our forum was secret from its inauguration to November last year. Have you seen a difference in behaviour? I haven't. And I mean, I could still post some questionable stuff, like pouring a kilo of ketchup on carbonara though we are public. I actually don't remember well how the situation was before, I probably don't spend enough time around this place... Anyway, my more general impression is that whether the forum remains open or it returns private the difference is very small. Basically the same users are around, no new people want to join, and no one is reporting the place to proboard. Even if we are open, no one cares at all about what is being written in here, so I don't think that changing the privacy setting would have many practical effects. Still, if I have to think about a reason why some users could find it so important to keep the whole forum private, it would be that they want to hide what they write in the forum from strangers at all costs. Probably, these "posts to hide" would mostly contain private information, questionable opinions or generally inappropriate content, all stuff for which there is still plenty of space in some currently hidden sections. But I think that for a thematic forum should also be important to share some real information (weather and climate info, in our case) and to make it available to everyone via google search. That's why I voted for keeping the forum open, and I won't change vote. With the previous post, I was mostly thinking that some users in a fully private forum would feel "more relaxed" about posting "private information, questionable opinions or generally inappropriate content", and in some situations I expect this to favour some more of these posts around the forum. Anyway, I don't expect visible differences anyway, that's why I wrote " I have a small fear" in the last post. (I know that my English is not so clear sometimes, but now I don't have the time to write it better)
