I strongly supported the idea or an open forum back when it was private. That being said, looking back at the last few months, opening the forum has obviously neither proved fruitful nor harmful, so I now don't care either way.

For the dunces who claim "there hasn't been any change in activity after the forum opened!", excuse me, but there most certainly has. Shortly ahead of 01 November 2019 (long-before the arrival of Razza and B87), many previously inactive members on here started posting more regularly—I could feel and see the change in activity, and very evidently so. During this forum's low-point in mid-2019, I went some days without a single "participated" notification; and posts-per-day were never more than 50, with 20–30 at some points! How can you say that there hasn't been any activity increase shortly after 01 November?
Many existing members on here have likely become more active because they are now assured that their posts are worth-while; if no-one can see my posts, then why post at all? Sure, you may not think like that, but you are not the only people on here—you insecure people are in the minority, in fact. How do I know that you people are in the minority? Because the previous poll results have demonstrated it, alongside the members who spoke out in favour of opening the forum—i.e. the previously inactive members themselves said that they are strongly in favour of publicity right on the blasted thread (the Aussies from Weatherzone also shared the same view). Private, top-secretive forums don't go anywhere...and as already mentioned, being the #No.1 search on the net (at least Google) for World Weather Forum, is in itself, a major advantage; prior to 01 November, we were not even on the first page of results.
Furthermore, the offensive content on this forum—of which a large quantity is my own posting, admittedly—is almost entirely confined to the Politics & Other Controversies board, and perhaps the Chat board; both of which are not visible to the public, and in fact, not visible even to registered members who have fewer than 25 posts i.e. restricted to the Senior Member status and beyond. If possible, hiding the shoutbox from the public will eradicate any issues remaining on this forum concerning offensive content.

First Ariete has posed 2 questions ... making shoutbox private or entire forum private so we need a third option in this poll. Second I can’t help but think his whole obsession with people lurking has to do with lommaren viewing this forum offline .... your obsession is over the top man get a damn grip.
Also this forum was on its last leg before we went public... a closed society will eventually die .
We are the number one search on google for world weather forum which gives us legitimacy when attracting new members . I can’t help but feel we missed out on some members we invited when private ... “ what is this closed forum . Creeepy never heard of it can’t even find it on google”

Oh, I'm perfectly fine with Lommaren lurking. Actually I prefer this to him being online and posting.
But yes, putting the shoutbox on private will be my next question.

Shoutbox can't be maded private. This is what I was told recently.
Go to Admin > Themes > Layout Templates > Forum Wrapper and look for this near the bottom: $[content] $[shoutbox]
and make it look like this: $[content] {if $[current_user.is_member]} $[shoutbox] {/if}
This will make it so only members can see the shoutbox.

Shoutbox can't be maded private. This is what I was told recently. Serching online it seems possible, but it requires to change some lines of the forum code [1] [2] [3] etc... (apparently, the question has been made several times on the support forum).
It also seems to be possible to make it only visible to users of certain groups (for example, only groups of users with more than N posts), but the coding involved looks a little more complex [4] [5]
PS
Looks like Ariete was faster

They're not knocking the down the door to get in here. There's zero evidence so far that anyone has stumbled across this place by chance.

There's zero evidence so far that anyone has stumbled across this place by chance. I don't think the point is that people will. I mean it would be cool if people eventually would but right now, its main purpose is to allow people invited here or who've heard of thr place to be able to preview the site a little.

It's pretty close, 11-12. The result is guaranteed to disappoint about half the forum either way.
I think a compromise could be reached on hiding the shoutbox but leaving the weather threads public. That oughta make most people happy.

That oughta make most people happy. We can't hide the shoutbox from guests only, we'd have to remove it completely. I don't want that, and a lot of other people here don't want that. We've already tried that and it wasn't all that great.

But yes - I would vote to keep the forum open, if the shoubox was made private.

Two biggest champions of keeping the forum public: Yahya Sinwar = We need to keep activity up! Has 180 posts, 1/2 of them in this thread or similar past threads
knot = High activity and membership is paramount! Consistently offends and pisses off 75% of the current members
