What positive has come out of having the forum open, besides irrelevant Aussies thinking this forum is more "inviting", and it showing up first on Google? And one can't attribute the recent increase in activity to an open forum, that's nonsense and the people who claim it's because of that know they're full of shit.

The shoutbox is hidden now, I don't see any advantage from also making weather related posts secret so I voted open but don't care much either way.

I voted to keep it open, I don't have any problem about making what I write accessible to everyone. I also have a small fear that setting the forum fully secret again would just make some users feel freer to write the most questionable stuff all over the forum, while the rest in practice would not change much. Yeah I agree with this. The online disinhibition effect is already responsible for a lot of the more questionable stuff on this forum. It's more like a real conversation when people know others might see what they say. Also the forum was basically half-dead just before we opened it, and it grew quite a bit over the last six months. It can't be proven exactly how much of this is a coincidence, and how much is the actual result of the forum being open. Maybe some of the new members who joined were convinced when they saw the forum. Myself and B87 contributing 1,600 posts in 2 months alongside the virus outbreak probably helped a 'lil bit.

One doesn't have to speculate, because the data is there.
As I said, here are all the members who have registered since the opening of the forum:
permianartist - invited from C-D, 0 posts, never logged in again log0008 - unknown, 0 posts, last login 4 days after registering segfault1361 - invited from C-D, last login today hb - unknown, 0 posts, never logged in again GayJ1013 - invited from C-D, active Razza - returning member B87 - returning member hornylaundrybasket - unknown, 1 post, last login 31 March
The open forum have yielded no benefits whatsoever. We have been more active for the past weeks simply because we are all under self-isolation/quarantine/lockdown. Around Christmas we were down to below 50 posts a day, in February we had 60-70 posts a day, and the forum was open then. A couple of weeks ago we were up to 139 posts a day, and I can bet my left nut that it wasn't due to the forum being open.

I don't get the whole "people are gonna be more polite/change the way they post because they know people are watching" comments. Who on here has honestly changed the way they post? I still say the same shit I did before we were "open", and I don't plan on changing it.

I always assumed that would be the case on FB Groups, everyone's identity is revealed so surely they'll all behave? Nope, still toxic asf.

Yeah, people still say really stupid, ignorant shit even with their real name, place of work, place they live, etc on their profile. Making a forum "open" isn't gonna change anyone's behavior.

Most of the time someone on here says something stupid/questionable they get immediately called out and chastised for it anyways. If I was a stranger and saw that morons get called out, I would be attracted to that forum.

It's pretty close, 11-12. The result is guaranteed to disappoint about half the forum either way. I think a compromise could be reached on hiding the shoutbox but leaving the weather threads public. That oughta make most people happy. It's 52-48%. An outrageously strong majority to make the forum private. We shall not be silenced. Our voices shall be heard!

Since the controversial parts are hidden it doesn’t matter much to me.

I honestly don’t care. Open or closed has made no difference in terms of new members, activity or what I post or don’t post. And I don’t think if we went back to closed or continued to be open there would be any difference.

The shoutbox has now been maded private anyway, I'm happy with that arrangement.

We dodged a big bullet there. With all those Aussies this forum would've died in the way we know it.

Referring to the shoutbox, again, I will tell you why the Australian invasion would've been detrimental for our forum. The possible active posters could've outnumbered us others 3 to 1, and soon all other discussion would've been buried under the Aussie weather, Aussie sports, Aussie politics etc nobody else gives a flying fuck about. Ultimately, why bother posting when your F4 tornado is being ignored because Wagga Wagga, Wollongong, Bogan Creek and other bogan places recorded a high 1C above average. You, knot, would've probably enjoyed it, but nobody else wouldn't. Think this way; what if I would invite 100-150 Finnish posters? Think KC streetviews are boring? How about in-depth discussion what Boganvaara recorded yesterday, Sanna's adventures or a traffic jam on the Helsinki-Turku motorway? And what are you whining about anyway? You have your new Australian weather forum, so you're free to fuck off. STREWTH!

You base your argument on the assumption that: 1) Aussies only want to talk about Aussie-related things 2) Aussies would be active in the shoutbox at all 3) Aussies would be active when you are active 4) Aussies would flood the shoutbox due to sheer numbers 5) The majority of the Aussies would even be regularly active 6) Aussies hate Finns 7) Aussies like the Aussie forum The above is pure conjecture on your part, and just looks like whining. If you don't like Aussies you can get out, strewth!
