A female friend took me to see a nature reserve yesterday, but it was really spontaneous so we of course didn't think of bringing any mosquito spray or proper pants instead of tights for her, and this nature reserve is a bog, and it rained earlier that day. I've never in my life encountered as many mosquitoes as I did that day. What's worse is when we walked together, there was a large swarm of mosquitoes around us, and when I moved away a few meters to take a picture of it, the entire cloud stuck with me and ignored her. Basically I'm really attractive to mosquitoes. Thus, I had this brilliant idea that maybe if I climbed up a tree, I'd be able to evade the mosquitoes, so I climbed up a 7-10m tall pine tree. It actually did work, and even more importantly, I got an incredible view over the boggy lake, appropriately named the Grรถss lake. More pictures:

I took some pictures of the town of Pordenone yesterday morning; it was 21 C and partly cloudy, and there are fewer people than usual even without the lockdown (the lack of tourists). Here they are: From Corso Vittoria San Emanuele II, the main street: The city hall ( Palazzo Comunale): From a separate shot an hour later. Palazzo Ricchieri: St. Mark's Cathedral ( Duomo di San Marco); note the towering cumulus clouds: St. George Parish ( Parrocchia San Giorgio): Looking southwest from Noncello River:

So I took some pictures in Milan yesterday, summer started pleasantly enough with a high of 31 C and dew points in the single digits C (RH in the low 20s%) and sunny skies (lots of photos here; I've put secondary spoilers). Palazzo RealeLooking west from Piazza del Duomo: The cathedral (duomo) itself: Vittorio Emanuele II's statue: Nice fan palms and bananas Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping mall: Palazzo dei Girueconsulti Palazzo Marino from Piazza della Scala: Leonardo da Vinci's statue: Teatro alla Scala: Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, really few people on the street; must be a lack of tourists + locals in siesta? Basilica di San Carlo al Corso: Via Monte Napoleone: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So at around 1 PM, I took some photos from Castello Sforzesco [the museums are closed until June 25th but I took pictures from outside]: Giuseppe Garibaldi's statue with Filarete Tower visible: Filarete Tower (the southern facade): Looking west towards Bona of Savoy's tower: Looking towards L'Ospedale Spagnolo: Ducal Court ( Corte Ducale): ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also went to the rooftop of Duomo at 6 PM, here are some pictures:

Sunset from my garden this evening, and the temperature was 21ยฐC because of cold air drainage from the Alban Hills at the time of making those photos. It was rather unremarkable, though I couldn't resist posting them...

I remember a big rocky face at or near Squamish - wonder if that's the one? That would be it. It's called Stawamus Chief, a big chunk of granite. It's impossible to miss, even on low visibility days. It's in your face in Squamish. Awesome mountain.

Approcaching storm clouds on Thursday. Of course I got nothing. At least it went up to 94ยฐF that day, down to around 90ยฐF at the moment of the photo. Pics from a walk in the woods today. It's a nice change from the parched look where I live a couple dozen km away. The eastern suburbs got more rain in May and especially June than the western parts, so maybe that's why.

Pics from a hike in the Alps yesterday. Who said Paris has no mountains within weekend trip distance? Gonna post a hike summary following the Cambium templateยฎ (thanks Strava). June 27, 2020 Trailhead elevation: 1673 m (5489') Top elevation: 2919 m (9577') Total elevation gain: 1326 m (4350') Distance: 21.5 km (13.4 mi) Time to summit: 3h17 Time back to trailhead: 2h36 Trailhead: Mammatus Besso (3667 m / 12031'). Would be a remarkable mountain pretty much anywhere else in Europe, but in Valais it's dwarfed by its neighbors. Speaking of mountains dwarfing it, here's the Weisshorn. Not obvious on this photo, but it's one of the highest mountains in the Alps, at 4505 m / 14580'! Not really aptly named from this POV. Crossing the river Looks like it's a rather recent trail: The north face of the Grand Cornier (3962 m /12999') Looking back at the bridge: Trail is complete with patches of slippery old snow and a scary rope bridge! Looking up from the bridge The glacier is barely visible under its blanket of rocks: The Dent Blanche (4357 m / 14295') is partially hidden by stubborn clouds, being the highest summit in the vincinity. Didn't show up at all all day. The Obergabelhorn (4063 m / 13330') is a mighty beautiful mountain. Funnily enough the much more famous Matterhorn is just behind. Together with its neighbor the Mont Durand to the right. Toponyms tell me that the French/German language divide crosses the pass between the two. The shelter looks like it's about to be eaten by ice. Lots of ominous noises coming from the glaciers, saw a couple avalanches. God she's beautiful! Gee the weather is turning to shit. Can even hear thunder. The Weisshorn is better lit getting back:

I went to lakeside beach state park to play some disc golf today, my first time outside of Monroe county since October! Pretty setting right on Lake Ontario: It was a very nice drive there too on the Lake Ontario parkway. Lots of views of the lake, several small bays, creeks and large marshy areas.
