Hike Mt. Ascutney (3100 feet) in Vermont on Monday 60 miles to the north. Was gloomy at home, on the drive north switched to sunshine. 50 or so miles to the south it's raining. almost to the summit from the summit tower

🖕🏿Mörön🖕🏿 Okay all those shots, except maybe the first, and the close-ups of trees, looked exactly like they were taken in inland/northern/central Sweden how different do mine look? More different. Vegetation is more similar to southernmost Sweden since there's more large broad leaf trees. And the topography is most similar to the High Coast area 100km south of Umeå, but those areas tend to have mostly pine trees on the hills, often with bare rock at the top. We don't have rolling hills of broad leaf trees anywhere.

Nice sky over downtown Umeå last Saturday Some more shots over the last week: On the 14th there were some pretty bright sundogs. The bright clouds to the left and right of the sun were too bright to look at Nice and orange sunset too that day. Foliage is definitely way past peak. The natural forests are like 90% bare, and most planted trees have very few leaves too. But this huge poplar (doesn't really show on the image, but it's really tall, like 30m at the very least) is 100% green still which looks kinda weird compared to the rest of the mostly bare vegetation.

Beautiful pictures, especially the one that is your profile pic. I didn'texpect such a "4-season vibe" in WA.

Thanks Donar! Yeah the SW corner of WA is a pretty unique part of WA in that it has the strongest changes between seasons (as in you can actually feel the 4 seasons). Nearby town: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnybrook,_Western_Australia but you can get even cooler climates further south. That reminds me, I'll be down in that region again in late November for some camping and maybe surfing, should be much more "summery" weather down there.

It's interesting, because normally snow depth on top of tables, benches etc. tends to be thinner than on the ground because some snow will blow away and because they're more exposed to the air, thus melting faster in mild weather. But right now, the snow is 8cm thick on my balcony table, whereas the snow on lawns outside is less than 2cm thick, which is an indication that the ground is still a fair bit warmer than the 0-2'C air around us right now.

Not to sound like Thunderpussycat posting pictures from the garden all the time, but sunset this evening was stunning with cirrus clouds reflecting the sun...

Really beautiful weather today. The first winter day. High and low of 4.3/-5.3'C at the airport, with a 24h mean of -1.2'C. But the air was crisp and the sky was clear, and the ground was (partially) white. I took a nice walk, enjoying the pleasant weather. Snow is a lot nicer in October than in winter IMO, because I know it will only last for a few days at most, whereas snow in winter is likely to last for months. Makes it easier to appreciate while it lasts. The combination of foliage and snow is also pretty neat. For some reason, today felt more like a spring day than a fall day. It doesn't really make sense because the grass is normally pretty yellow in spring here, and the sun is a lot stronger, and snow cover is concentrated to piles instead of the thin and even snow cover right now. And of course we don't have yellow leaves, or trees with sparse but large leaves in spring either. I guess it's just the sunny weather, dry air, and melting snow after a period of gloomy weather. Feels pretty good either way. Very bright foliage on larch trees right now. Very nice lighting in the woods. Looked crisp. One part of the forest was teeming with maple trees. One of them had really strange leaves. Must've got some kind of mutation. In all other ways it looked the same as the nearby maple trees. It was just the leaves that were strangely shaped. And almost all leaves were littered by small ⌀2-4mm holes. Close to my house there's a huge linden tree and two pretty large beech trees (the largest I've seen in Umeå at least). Normally beech trees tend to hold on to their leaves longer than most other trees, and they also tend to stay green for longer than most trees. But of these two beeches, one is almost completely bare (not shown in the photo) and the other is only sparsely covered in orange-brown leaves, while the huge linden tree is almost completely green still. The local pond managed to get a thin sheet of ice where there was debris . While most trees now are nearly or completely bare, especially in wild forests, I found this grove that stuck out with it greenness.

Wonder what kind of flower this is that flowers in late October (two days ago) A bunch of pictures from today's sunny weather: I'm curious what kind of temperatures this pit experiences. Nice aesthetic with the smoke from the preschool campfire against the beautiful October sun. Some very green grass down town, and the remnants of a snow man. You can also see some frost on the leaves in the shaded areas of the grass. About a 3'C high up from a -2'C low, but with little to no wind, little melting went on in shaded areas. I really like the riverside "park" down town. Besides having some nice and beautiful trees, they also have a bunch of neat evergreen hedges/shrubs, and tall grass that stays green until winter pretty much. Right now, when almost every leaf is gone in the natural forests, it looks really nice and green down town. A nice contrast from the otherwise dull nature in late October. I generally think Umeå is a pretty ugly city. But the entire eastern side of the river front is really modern and nice looking. I like the way the white apartment buildings have tiered roof slopes. Looks fancy and exotic in my opinion. And of course the art museum and university of architecture are neat looking. This stretch of the riverside walk is always noticeably warmer than the rest of the city during sunny days. A neat microclimate generated by the sun getting reflected off the river and hitting the quite tall, wide and dark walls of these buildings, which also have lots of large windows in some sections that reflect the sun back to you again. I had to button up my jacket when walking through this area. Art gallery building The less fancy part of the riverside apartment complex. There are three different building companies that have got apartments along this stretch. The fanciest part is the middle part, the white ones off in the distance with tiered roofs. While the buildings themselves don't really look all that pretty, the general area is still very pretty. At least for Umean standards. Very nice that most of the bushes are still very green. Really nice area. Incredibly expensive though. I don't know the exact prices for these apartments, but I know those white apartments slightly further east cost like 600€/mo for a like 33m2 whereas my apartment is 37m2 at 300€, and they're just like 400m apart and owned by the same company.
