I figured that I'd start a new thread dedicated to posting photographs from March 1st onwards. Starting off with a picture of the sky after the leading edge of the cold front arrived, about 20 minutes ago; it was taken from the phone, I was in a rush to photograph it, lol.

Pics from a morning stroll Birds singing for the first day of spring! Noice! Looking the other way I wouldn't venture on that ice. Bummer, there's usually a thick snow cover on that lake this time of the year. This peat bog is a cold spot of the valley. Pitiful snowpack in the forest. Small sinkhole as there are dozens in that forest. It must record siberian temperatures on calm, clear nights with fresh snow. The Amburnex station a dozen miles away dipped to -13°C this morning after a 13°C high yesterday. Big diurnal range typical of such locations. It was -8°C at the station just outside the sinkhole though. That's not much of a difference, probably due to the worn out snowpack. Coldest this winter was -33°C inside the sinkhole and -24°C outside. Looks like there's some snow left here and there. Aww cute cabin <3 Man do I love these tall spruces!

Went for a walk through some woods right on the edge of the South Saskatchewan River this afternoon. Despite the cloudiness it was actually quite pleasant, around -5C with almost no wind at all and I was fairly heavily dressed. Combined with the physical exertion of trudging through the snow (quite dense in certain places), I was a bit sweaty by the end of it.

Snowiest spot I found while cross-country skiing. There was 1.5 m of snow at a nearby snow ruler. Shabby looking snowman Fort built after the Napoleonic wars From a walk in the woods. Fucking evil looking tree. What a fucked up sight. Some cabin far from the trailhead. Can come in handy if one's caught up in a blizzard. There's a fireplace inside and a room upstairs just under the roof. Creepy, silent place tho. Trail is slightly descending. Looks like woods are getting clearer? Indeed, the talweg is clear from trees. It's a closed talweg, meaning cold air has all the ability to pool on calm, clear nights. Doesn't look like an inverted treeline tho. Please note the yellowish tint of the snow, due to Saharan dust in February. Yeah it hasn't snowed at all since mid-February.

I went camping for 2 nights (arrived Friday, left Sunday) up at the Wilderness Campground at Heart Lake in the Adirondacks. Here are photos from the campground and my campsite/tent. On Saturday I climbed Wright Peak on my own, an elevation gain of about 2500 ft or 750 m. The base is 2000ft and the peak is 4500 ft AMSL. Snow depth was around 5 to 6 feet once you got to 4000 ft. That's one of the advantages of hiking in March: you get to see the whole build-up from the last 4 to 5 months. Was about 0f with wind chills around -20f on the summit, not bad at all. Was colder when I climbed Algonquin last year, around -10f on the summit with chills around -40. Was still hoping for colder both times.

Day Trip to Boyagin Nature Park. Weather: ~32C maximum, mostly sunny skies. One of the last bastions of natural woodland inside the Western Australian wheatbelt and only 1.5 hrs away from Perth. Wanted to check it out and bushbash a bit in the area. The typical woodlands

Lol, it doesn't look like spring until early may over here. Until then, there is a risk of constant frost.

Aztec Caves Trail at Franklin Mountains State Park near El Paso. Weather was upper 50s and very windy, with blowing dust. Wind speeds were around 30 to 40 mph, with gusts around 50 mph.

The snow melt is coming along nicely in Saskatoon, especially for mid-March. We're definitely a couple weeks ahead of schedule right now. Quite a lot of variety as well, some places it's almost bare and in others there's still quite a lot, but even the areas with a decent snowpack left it's diminished quite a bit compared to a couple weeks ago.
