Bazball put the Aussies on the defensive from the very start. Looking forward to the obligatory Warner golden duck tomorrow.

Didn't even know it'd started today. Shows how much my interest in the sport has declined, maybe a good Ashes series will be what's needed to reignite it.

I tell yas what...'Bazball' will be hard to combat... the best way is to take wickets to stop 'em getting away from ya.... That was impressive by the Poms on day 1 of an ashes Series....

Australia 14-0 at the close, but the forecast for tomorrow is for cloudy skies in Birmingham. Shambolic batting collapse incoming? Was a disappointing day for England I think, some lucky dismissals for the Aussies. We should be getting 500+ against that standard of bowling attack.

The thing is 'bazball' involves risk taking... when it comes off its spectacular, but it looks ordinary with the wickets tumbling to poor shots. the Kiwis winning that game last year after following on was a classic case... I think if Warner fails in this game, its the end of his Test career....but if he and Khawaja get going it might be the end of Anderson and/or Broard.... both teams playing ageing stars in the twilight of their careers....

I still feel like Australia could easily be 5 down at lunch with overcast skies tomorrow.

Before Bazball: 1 win in 17 tests. After Bazball: 11 wins in 14 tests. It's definitely a risk worth taking. Spectators love it too, which is always a bonus.

Oh its great cricket... Test match purists shudder at it, but hell, this form of the game has to compete with T20 for spectators and sponsorship nowadays.

Oh its great cricket... Test match purists shudder at it, but hell, this form of the game has to compete with T20 for spectators and sponsorship nowadays. It's this demand for multiple formats that has led to this. In the sense that, at least in England, there's now fewer batsman with the technique to bat in a 5 day test match. They're switching between so many different formats that they end up with a kind of hybrid style. Root is technically sound enough, but under his captaincy we saw that whenever the going got tough, the rest of the team was unable to dig in, stay at the crease all day and grind out big scores. Most of the batsmen in the team tend to score more runs when they play aggressively, so Stokes and McCullum have given them free reign to do so.

Few thoughts: -That pitch was more dead than the shoutbox at 4pm -Lyon looked good -Root looked really good -Barely any maidens -Weird declaration
Overall probably one of the strangest day 1s of a test match I've ever watched. It's the best England have looked since 2010 but I still think we have a team to match them, so I'm not stressing.

I get the 'looking for a late session wicket' re the declaration.... but really, batting first, Root on fire with the bat, they mighta put on another 50 or 60 runs all out.... that would really have tested the Aussie batsmen chasing a big first innings total.

Interesting Day 2, maybe the pitch isn't as dead as first thought but there were clouds in the morning.
Khawaja is all class, swing is still a threat given the right conditions and Carey is also looking good. Day 3 should be another good day.
I didn't actually watch any cricket yesterday due to other commitments but should tune in tonight

I think the English bowlers get a bit more out of the Dukes ball, especially with the overcast conditions

All 4 results still possible going into the final day, but with rain in the morning and cloudy skies until the afternoon, the ball could start swinging round corners...
