This "lawn" near work has been mowed 1 month ago. It now looks like a hostile jungle.

In the meanwhile, this afternoon the hail managed to break the roof skylights of our labs. Considering the cost of any of the instruments below those skylights, this is definitively BAD. We tried to save what we could from the water entering from the broken roof, but at a certain point we were told to just sit and wait for it to end and so I had the time for taking some videos/pictures. Video 1, at the beginning, when it was mostly small hail with few larger pieces among the rest (which are the ones which broke the roof). Video 2, about 20-30 min later, when we were just looking at the sky with resignation hoping for this to end. ^ not the best resolution, but those are the holes in the skylights ^ I found this when retuning back home, more or less 45 min after the hail stopped to fall down ^ more or less any street in Turin after the storm passed over the place

Pics from my trip to Vancouver Island a week ago Amongst other members of my species I always admired this sloping landscape (near Sechelt) but never took a photo of it Better than Norway, fucaknnnn A lake in Nanaimo Forest at that lake Sat on a dry, mossy bed...very nice in the warm sun. Sun felt hot in this particular location for some reason Another look at the moss But then I teleported to southern Spain and found some lush forest, fucken! Southern Spain has some nice lush forest Drank beer in this parking lot. Nice sunset in the Cowichan Valley At the summit of Cobble Hill. There were swarms of dragon flies; the most I've ever seen in one spot. Very strange. A hazy Mt Baker in the background neiSouthern Spain forest again Cowichan Valley Dry as fuck here Bark of the arbutus tree. Obviously a remnant of a warmer past climate. Got the perfect spot on the ferry back to the mainland

Routine warm and dry summer day at 89/75, but the hazy skies were epic and anything but routine! Thick wildfire smoke in the lower levels of the atmosphere lowered the visibilty to 2 miles on what was otherwise a completely sunny day, and it literally smelled like a campfire outside. Sun turned orangeish! My own pic from the day.

No time to get out and attempt any quality photos but here's a quick snapshot from Mount Douglas north over Cordova Bay towards the Southern Gulf Islands that sort of illustrates just how dry things are getting around here.

Seems strange for most Aussies to think of July as a severe fire danger month, however up in the Top End we are now entering our dangerous bushfire risk time of the year. With rain stopping at the end of April, there has been 2 and a half months of drying and curing of the bush. And both June and July have seen well above average temps this year. From about now until the breaking of the first build up rains, the local Bushfire Brigades have to put in some big days protecting lives and property in the Darwin rural suburbs. Of huge concern in recent years is the rapid spread of introduced pasture grasses into the local environment. Gamba grass and mission grass cures earlier than the natural grasses, the wildfires burn hotter and are near impossible to contain in strong gusty south easterlies as we experienced yesterday. Photos by local weather enthusiast Damon Wagland. Water bombers brought in to assist.
