Pics from Greece from late August.
Ancient ruin lost in a sea of midrises... This must be Athens!
Temple of Athena the vicotrious on the Acropolis
Shame we couldn't access any of the parks because of the high fire risk.
Doric? Corinthian? No, these are Ionic columns!
These caryatids silently contemplate the city since around 400 BC. Well, almost as these are copies.
If you wanna see the pediments of the Parthenon, you must head to London.
The urban fabric of Plaka, the neighborhood just at the feet of the Acropolis to its north, is obviously quite different from that of the rest of the city:
Lycabettus hill
Undecided if these are uglier than Paris' roofs or not.
Athens' sister cities must be Naples and Marseille.
Dafuq?
Mmh must not be the same homeowner...
In the flea market
It is a good thing that ridicule never killed anyone, otherwise there would be a hecatomb among evzones.
Lots of ships waiting to enter the port of Piraeus:
This was once the largest temple of the universe:
Off to the island of Amorgos in the Cyclades. Nice blue there.
Nice water, though I expected more than the paltry 25°C I got after the heatwave. Adriatic, Thyrrenian & Ionian seas >> Aegean sea when it comes to SSTs.
Neat view from our room:
Ship sailing into darkness
Walking up the stairs to a monastery. It felt so fucking hot in the sun that a woman collapsed.
In the nearby island of Naxos. Bar patrons looking for shade:
Local fauna
Around sunset, a strange procession takes place.
Pleople gather on top of a small hill facing the town, where the Apollo gate proudly stands since 530 BC.
At that time the humidity was rather oppressive, with dews around 25°C (upper 70s).
It was getting really crowded at the end.
There are some picturesque villages in the mountainous interior.
This is a 27 century old statue. I'm afraid to be rude but it kinda shows:
Monument to a fisherman lost at sea probably:
Nimbocumulus!11!1!1!1!1!!!
Not many tourists on the remote east coast:
Off to Santorini. Some villages face the interior of the Caldeira formed after a cataclysmic explosion around 1600 BC.
Is it a glacier on top of that volcanic cliff?
Not, it's the town of Thira!
View from up there
In the nearby village of Oia
Potscard Greece right there
Oia is too touristy to be enjoyable though. We had to stop for 10 minutes at some point down that street because the ped traffic was too fucking heavy. Rediculous.
But it's extremely scenic, that's for sure.
Full-sized trees are as rare as hen's teeth, and are a welcome change from the shrubby vegetation outside towns.
Bye Santorini!
Back in Paree, it was nice to see some greenery. The Med has nice summers temps, but the lack of greenery is deffo a minus.
